PETE F. GREGORY, OF SOUTH BEND, INDIANA.
DOOR HOLDER.
Application filed January 15, 1926.
The invention relates to means lor holding doors in a closed or an open position or in an intermediate partly open position.
The object of the invention is the provision of means, particularly adapted for garage or barn doors, but may be applied to other types of doors or tencel gates, and analogous structures, and the provision of a device that may be applied to doors already in use and that will hold the door in a closed position or in a partly or fully open position as may be desired, comprising a notched bar having offset ends secured to the door, and an arm pivotally secured to the door post and having a detent comprising a band 'termed into a loop with oiset ends pivotally engaging the free end of the arm, said loop being slidably mounted on the bar and adapted to drop into the notches to hold the door in the adjusted positions.
The invention will be described in detail hereinafter and will be found illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- VFigur-e l is an inside view of a pair of doors, shown fragmentally, showing the door holding device mounted thereon,
Figure 2 a horizontal sectional view on a plane indicated by the line 2 2 of Figure l., and
Figure 3 a detail sectional view on a planeindicated by the line 3-3 of Figure l.
In the drawings similar reference characters will be used to designate corresponding parts throughout the several views.
The door holding device is shown applied to the doors A that are hinged. in the usual manner to the door post B, and comprises a bar l having offset portions 2 on its ends that are secured to the door A, and having notches 4, 5, and 6 in its upper edge. A bracket is secured to the door post B having rectangu- Seral No. 81,439.
lar offset ends 8 and 9 for this purpose and pivotally secured to the bracket is an arm comprising two rods l0 and 1l pivotally secured above and below the offset end of said bracket and having their free ends converging as clearly shown in Figure l. A detent is provided comprising a strap bent intermediate of its ends into a loop l2, and having offset ends 13 that are pivotally secured between the converged free ends of the rods 10 and 1l, said loop enclosing the bar l and adapted to engage in the notches 4;, 5, or 6 to hold the door either in a closed position as shown in full lines in Figure 2, or in a partly adjusted posit-ion as shown in4 the intermediate position in Figure 2 in broken lines, or in a` fully open position as shown in broken lines in the same figure.
lt will'be apparent that while the device may he used as a lock for the doors A, it will also be apparent that other means for permanently locking the doors may be provided auxiliary to the holding means above described.
V-hat is claimed is ln a door holding` device, a bar having a series or" notches in its upper edge, said bar having oiliset ends adapted tobe secured to a door, a bracket adapted to he secured to a door post and offset at an angle thereto, an arm comprising rods pivotally secured above and below said offset portions to the bracket and having tieir free ends converged, and a detent conmrising a looped member slidably enclosing said bar and having offset ends pivotally secured 'to the arm, between the ends oit said rods, said detent being adapted to seat in said notches to hold the door in adjusted positions..
ln testimony whereof l aitix my signature.
PETE F. GREGORY.
