HAIR CLIP.

Application led February The present invention relates to improvements in hair clips and more particularly to .such clips adapted for permitting a woman to removably and invisibly support and secure ornaments or different masses of false hair such as coils, chignonsf7 pads, wigs, fringes or the like upon her short-cut hair. n l

The primary object of the invention is to provide a hair clip ofthe class referred to having a very light, simple, compact and reduced structure composed of a minimum number of parts and adapted for being` readily attached by the user or the hair dresser to any desired portion of the hair and readily detached therefrom whilst beingvfirmly retainable in the hair.

A further object of the invention isto provide such a hairclip adapted for being entirely inconspicuous while.performing` its function of maintaining ornaments or false hair upon the mass of short-cut real hair.`

A still further object of the invention is to provide such a hair clip adapted-for not injuring i. e. not crumpling or not breakingthe real hair when attached thereto with its dependent mass of false hair or detached therefrom whilst performing an invariable retention of said false hair in the 30 selected position during any period of time.

A still further object of the invention is to provide a wearless hair clip of the class described adapted for being utilized any number of times, that is to say for playing. its retaining function over and over again.

With these and such other objects in view as will incidentally appear in the following description and claims, theinvention con-.

` This improved hair clip is primarily constituted by two juxtaposed rectangular metal plates preferably very slightly curved: an upper plate l and a lower plate 2 (the terms upper and lower7 being merely for the purpose of illustration). The upper plate l preferably has rounded corners and is `pierced adjacent the latter with round holes 3 through which may be passed the threads or wires securing the ornament or the mass of false hair (coila chignon, pad, wig. fringe or the like) which has to be removably attached upon the short-cut real hair. Said upper plate l is also formed with a vmarginal flange el. which by being clinched over. the peripheral edge of the lower plate 2 firmly holds the two plates together. It is moreover stamped to present a depression 5 adjacent its fore end and three parallel rounded ribs7 6. 6": 6a extending over the greater part of its length. The lower plate 2 is also stamped to presentl two round depressions 7, two shallow rectangular depressions 8 in the neighborhood of its fore end, a central longitudinal rib 9 and two `side longitudinal ribs l0 for purposes that 85 `will presently appear. Said lower plate 2 `is moreover pierced adjacent its four corners with round holes 3 registering` with the corresponding holes in the upper plate for the above-stated purpose and with a hole ll positioned so as to substantially correspond with the rear end of the central rib 6 formed in the upper plate.

'Adjacent its r ...ar end, the upper plate l is formed on its sides with oppositel;7 disposed bearings l2 wherein are pivotally mounted the two outwardly bent ends of the two legs of a swinging clamp 13 preferably formed by a slightly iiexible wire of rounded section, said two legs being substantially parallel.y connected by a cross-strip 14. provided over the greater part of their length with sleeves l5 made of rubber or another soft resilient material and united at their fore ends by au integral portion bent upon itself as shown in Fig. 3 to present the shape of a claw 13a which is adapted to lock the clamp 13 in positionas will now be described.

Within the rib 6 formed centrally in the upper plate 1 is housed a coil spring 16 which .abuts at i'ts rear end against the ex tremity Iof said rib and at its fore end against the rounded rear end of a lbolt 1-7 which presents the .notched .contour clearly shown in Fig. 3 and is terminated forwardly by a nose or hook 17a projecting from sai-d rib when in normal locking position and adapted to engage with the claw-like fore end of the flexible clamp 13 to lock same Ydown when in extended position :and release same when it has been brought to its retracted position against the antagonism of its spring 16.

To temporarily retract the locking bolt 17 .there isprovifded a trigger 1:8 of flat structurefasxrepresentedin Fig. 2. AThis trigger' has a round perfor-ation delineated by .a slight flange for the purpose of lbeing pivotally mounted on a :slight protuberance 19 formed by the one or the other of lthe depressions 7 in the lower plate 2. Furthermore'said trigger has an integral lug 18a which constantly engages .a notch 17'vb cut in the bolt 17 and `a triangular or otherwise shaped portion 18b which constantly protrudes outside of the plates 1 and 2 throudh an interruption of the flange 4 'whereby by pushing the said trigger inward its' lug 18a forces the bolt 17 rearwardly against the spring 16 and thus releases the claw which can thu-s spring up and assume the position illustrated 'in Fig. y3 and therefore permit the user to disengage the ornament lor the mass of false hair fastened to the clip 'from the mass of her real hair.

VWhen it is desired to again lock the .swinging clamp 13 in closed position, all that is necessary is to snap its fore claw underneath the hook 17EL of the bolt 17, which, upon release of the trigger, has been pushed back to its normal locking position aiod thus again protrudes outside the central ri 6.

YVhen thus in its locked position, the Clamp 13 has its two slightly flexible legs provi-ded with rubber or other soft resilient sleeves 15 as above described accommodated within the respective grooves formed be- `tween the central'rib 6 and the

side ribs

6a, 6a so that said legs do not materially project `above said central rib except at their fore end. The claw formed vat said latter end is held down by theV hook 17a of the bolt 17 so that the tip of said claw is located and protected in the depression 5 project.

lt will thus be appreciated that when in ylocked position th-e ent-ire clip has no projecting part'liable to damage the real hair of the user. Furthermore as it is entirely and does not hidden under the ornament or'mass of false hair temporarily attached upon said real h air, it 1s altogether inconspicuous and not hable to open itselfwhereby any accidental loss of the hair attachment is precluded. Lastly, owing to the resilient sleeves 15 provided around the legs of the 'clamp 13, the real-hair of the user does not run the rislr of Vhecoming crumpled, broken, torn off or j otherwise damaged since the pressure exert-k -ed Aon it is cushioned by said sleeve-s which also protect it from a direct contact with the lmetal of the fclfip :and from any eventual stain due to such metal.

What l claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A hair clip `tor lthe purpose set forth Vcomprising an upper ribbed and :depressioned plate and a lower ribbed and depressioned plate substantially of equalsi'ze firmly held in liuntaposed relation and having registering holes for securing fthe hair attachment, a swinging clamp pivotally mounted in bearingsformed on the upper plate, a locking 'bolt pushed by a Vspring housed in a rib of the rupper plate and engaging said clamp Yand Vpivotal means located 'between said plates and partly Vprojecting laterally therefrom for retraeting the bolt and unlocking the clamp.

2. A hair clip for the purpose set ,forth comprising an upper rectangular plate having three ribs extending over the greater portion of its length and delineating two grooves, a lower rectangular plate substantially of equal size firmly held against the upper plate, both plates having registering corner holes yfor securing the hair attachment, a swinging clamp `formed of a slightly llexible wire .bent upon itself to form two substantially parallel legs forwardly united by an integral claw-like bent portion, opposite bearings formed on the upper plate wherein are pivotally housed the ends of the clamp legs, a locking bolt housed in the central rib and forwardly shaped as a hook, a spring also housed in the central rib and abutting at one end against the end of said rib and at its other end against said bolt and pivotal means located between said plates and partly projecting therefromk for temporarily retracting the bolt and thus unlocking the clamp. y

8. A hair clip for the purpose set forth comprising an upper rectangular slightly curved plate having a central rib and two side ribs extending over lthe greater portion of its length and forwardly formed with a depression, a lower rectangular slightly curved plate substantially of equal size {irmly held against the upper plate by a clinched flange on the latter, registering corner holes being provided in said plates for passing the securing means ofthe hair attachment, a longitudinal swinging clamp formed of a slightly flexible Wire bent upon itself to form two substantially parallel legs locating themselves in the respective grooves between the ribs and forwardly united by an integral claw-like portion, resilient sleeves around said legs, opposite bearings formed on the upper plate for pivotally supporting the outwardly bent ends of said legs, a looking bolt housed in the central rib, said bolt having a notch intermediate its length and being forwardly terminated as a hook, a coil 15 spring also housed in said central rib and abutting by its respective ends against the ends of said central rib and said bolt and a perforated trigger pivotally mounted flatly between the plates on an axis formed by the inner protuberanee corresponding to a depression of the lower plate, a portion of said flat trigger protruding outside and laterally of the plates and another portion of said trigger shaped as a lug engaging the notch in the bolt for retraeting same and thus re'- leasing the clamp.
