Application and October 19, was. Serial 10. 88,301.
This invention relates to improvements in appliances for assisting anatomical organs in the preformances of'their natural functions, as well as to the general class of sur- .gical appliances, wherein a two-fold use of such a device may be employed, to-witz by surgeons, or'doctors, in holding a member of the human body in desired position and condition for cauterization or medical treatment, as well as to give assistance in the performance of its natural functions.
The object of the invention is, the proand highly eflicient in operation, with its parts so made and arranged that it can be readily, quickly and securely applied to the member and m such a manner as to be easily and uickly removed.
Another 0 ject is, to provide. means for clamping and supporting, near its junction with the human body and scrotum, the generative organ of' a man as well as the upper part of the scrotum, in such a way that the lnflowing' blood, through the deep laying arteries, will be dammed and the back flow retarded or checked, through the veins lying close to the upper surface of the member, thus causing the blood to be confined,
. in the member, and producing the desired result or ri may. 7
Further objects and advantages of the in vention will be disclosed in the following description and explanation, which will be more readily understood when read in conjunction with the accompanying drawing, m which an embodiment of the invention is illustrated; it being understood that modifications and changes can be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the .invention, so long as they fall within the scope of the claims, forming a part hereof.
In'the drawin Figure 1, is a slde view in elevation of an appliance embodyingthe invention, showing it in about its operative position.
igure- 2, .is a front prespective view of the appliance detached, and p Fi re 3, is area'r view in elevation, showing t e means for attaching and detaching Like numerals of reference desi ate corresponding parts throughout the dg derent views of the drawing. A 1
Referring now more particularly to Fi the stra 1 and 2, of the drawing, it will be-seen and understood that the evice comprises an apron, or member, 5, made of sheet rubber or any other pliable and elastic material. This apron or member is widened laterally, as shown, and has, at about itslongitudinal middle, on its front surface, an elastic, tubular, sleeve 6, preferably integral therewith, of any suita le dimensions, to receive and clamp or resiliently hold that portion of the generative organ'7, adjacent to the upper portionand juncture therewith of the scrotum 8, and body 9, of the male body. This sleeve, like the apron or member 5, is
soft, more or less flexible and elastic, and
may project any distance forwardly from the apron or member 5, but'somewhat less vthan one inch, has been found to be quite sufiicient for obtaining the roper function of said sleeve on the organ It'w1ll be observed that each of the laterally extended portions 10, and 11, of the member 5, is reduced outwardly, to form band like straps or flaps, and that the free end of, the portion 10. is provided with an enlargement or knob 12, while the free end of the portion. 11, is' likewise furnished with an enlargement or knob'13, to aid in applying the device and in removably fastening it in position.
r The upper central portion of the apron or member 5, may be fashioned with some degree of fullness, as at 14, to adapt said portion to more readily conform to the lower front portion of the abdomen and to more effectually assist in securing the device in position, for it will be understood, by reference to Figs. 1, and 3, of the drawing, that or portion 11, is passed twice around t e neck or juncture of the scrotu m .before being tied at the back thereof, as shown in Fig. 3, of the drawing.
This manner of fastening the device is the preferred way, but other ways or means, for
obvious that the portion 10, may stretched rearwardly on one side of the scrotum, by pulling on the enlargement 12, in the proper direction. The elasticity of the apron or member-5, and its portion 10, will permit the said enlargement 12,-to assume about the position shown in Fig. 3, when it is apparent that the portion or strap 11, can be extended from the other side and rearwardly of the neck of the scrotum, then under the enlargement 12. and forwardly and entirely around that portion of the apron above the sleeve 6, then upwardly around the extremity of the portion 10, just in front of its enlargement 12, and then looped or tucked under itself to be easily released, by pulling on its knob 13, thus releasing the portion 11, and: allowing it to be unwrapped and the device quickly removed.
It will be understood that the elasticity of the device is such as to permit, in putting the device on, a free flow of blood towards the free end of the organ 7, through the deeply lying arteries, yet to so check or retard the return flow through the superficial veins as to confine the blood in the organ and thus ping the-sleeve 6, on the organ, will in itself -cause the flow of blood to the organ.
Having thus fully described the invention, What is. claimed and desired to be secured by Letters Patent is An appliance of the class described consisting of an elastic apron or member elongated laterally and having between its lateral ends an elastic sleeve extended forwardly from said apron,'one of said elastic lateral portions being longer andmuch narrower than the other elastic lateral portion and each provided at its end with an enlargement, whereby the shorter portion may be disposed at one side of and to the rear of the neck of the scrotum, and whereby the longer portion may be disposed at the other side of and rearwardly of the scrotum, then extended forwardly and entirely around that portion of the apron above the sleeve, then up wardly around the extremity of the shorter portion in front of its enlargement, and then tucked under itself.
