JOURNALeBUI-RETAINING DEVICE.
Application filed Gctob'cr 30, 1924. Serial No. 743,908.
This invention relates to a journalfbox *retaining device. iOne object of the invention is to provide a` simple, durable and efficient retaining device for journal boxes, whereby journal boxes are prevented from accidental displacement with respect to the pedestal jaws of the side frame.
Another object is to provide a journal box retaining device adapted to meet the various requirements under service conditions.
These and other objects are accomplished by means of the arrangement shown on the accoi'npanyingl sheet of drawings in which, Figure 1 is a fragmentary side elevation ot' a railway car truck side frame showing` iedestal jaws, a journal box and retaining means for the latter embodying my invention; and, f j
Figure 2 is a fragmentary top plan view of the same..
The various novel features of the invention will be apparent from the following description and drawings and will be particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
Referring to the iigures on the drawings, it will be noted that my invention is illustrated in connection with a railway car truck side frame 10, having an outer pedestal jaw 11 and an inner pedestal jaw 12, between which a journal box 13 is received. The journal box jaws 11 and 12 have the usual guide surfaces 14e and 15 respectively, which are adapted to cooperate with the corresponding vertical walls 16 and 17 respectively of the journal box 13. The journal box is provided with the usual side flanges or ribs 18, which embrace lateral sides of the pedestal jaws 11 and 12 for limiting relative lateral movement between said jaws and journal box. v
This invention has to do primarily with means for retaining` the journal box against accidental vertical displacement with respect to the side franie,-for example, in the case of derailments. In' this connection it will be noted that the inner journal box jaw 12 is as a matter of factis .otlset with respect to the associated .vertical guide face '15 rof the j iedestal jaw 12. Ylhe sole function ofthe projection 19 is to yprovide a support in which the loclr receiving groove 20 may be formed without in any way allecting the guide face 15 of the jaw. One'leg 22 of'an L shaped lool; member r23 is Vremovably kmounted inhsaid groove 2O and is vertically aligned withand underlies two of the ribs or flanges 18 on one side of the journal box for the purpose of preventing the journal box from being displacedjin a vertical direction with respect to the pedestal jaws. The other legI 2drot the L shaped lock mem. ber 23 extends alongside of the outer side face of the pedestal jaw 12 and has an eye portion 25 for the reception of .a retaining bolt 26. This bolt passes through an open# ing 27 in the pedestal jaw 12 and-has its head 28 on the interior side of the flange 29 of the pedestal jaw 12.` After said retaining bolt 26 is passed through the opening 27 and through the eye portion 25 of the lock` member, the nut 30 is applied to the threaded end of the bolt 26 for retaining the lock member 23 in its norma-l locking position. A cotter pin or a similar member 31 is passed through an opening in the bolt 26 for preventing the nut 30 from vbeing accidentally removed from the bolt.
By means of this arrangement, not only is the journal box prevented from lateral displacement with respect to the journal box jaws, but also the journal box is prevented .from accidental vertical displacement with respect thereto. y
I claim:
'1. 1n a railway car truck, the combination of a side frame having inner and outer pedestal jaws, the inner pedestal jaw having a projection with a lock receiving groove therein extending transversely of said side frame, a journal box mounted in said jaws and having means for cooperating with the jaws to limit relative lateral movement there'- between, and a lock member extending transversely of said side frame mounted in said groove and adapted to engage a portion of said journal box to prevent accidental vertical displacement of said journal box with respect to said jaws. j 1
2. In a railway car truck, the y'combination of a side frame having pedestal jaws, one of which jawsbeing provided with a projec- 4tion having a lock receiving groove therein tical displacement of said journal box with respect to said jaws.
3. In a railway car truck, the Combination of a side frame having pedestal jaws, one of which jaws being provided with a. projection having a laterally extending lock receiving groove therein, a journal .box mountedV in with said jaws to limit relative lateral 1novement with respect thereto, and an L shaped lock member, one portion of which is mountthereiin a journal box mounted between said vthe latter with respect to said jaws.` said jaws and having in-eansto cooperate ed in said groove for `engaging a portion of j said journal box to prevent accidental vertical displacement of said journal box with respect to said jaws, and another' portion of said lock being secured to the associated jaw. l. In a railway car truck, the combination of a side frame having pedestal jaws, one ot l which jaws has projection offset inwardly with resp-ect to the vertical guide face of said jaw and has a. look receiving groove jaws, and a lock Inemberniounted in said .groove for engagement with a portion oi said journal box to prevent displacement ot j Signed at Chicago,Illinois,` this 27th day 35 of October, 1924.
`eiiondr G. FLOYD.
