SE FRAME AND JOURNAL-BOX.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 22, 1915.
Application led November 223, 1914. Serial No. 874,521.
T0 all lfri/1.0m it may Concern Be it known that l, Emo l/V. PALMQUIST,
citizen of the United States, residing at- St. Louis, State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Side Frames and Journal-Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to car trucks and has particular reference to a novel attaching device for use between the frame' and journal box.
ln ear trucks. nowl commonly constructed, the side frame members are cast in a single piece and are -frequently provided with jaws or pedestals at their ends between which jaws a journal box is fitted. This provides against separation in lateral directions, but it is preferable that means should be provided to prevent possible accidental separation in a vertical direction. Preferably such means should. be oit a simple character and inclosed in such manner as to avoid injury and deterioration. Cheapness and simplicity in construction are essential elements in such a device and it is thought the desirable rfeatures heretofore mentioned are secured in the construction here disclosed.
rlhe invention will be more'readily under-- stood by reference to the accompanying drawings inwhich,
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a 'fragment of a car truck side frame and journal box, the journal box being shown in section; Fig. 2 is a plan view thereof; Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1; Fig. 4C is a view similar to Fig. 1, showing a slightly modified construction; and Fig. 5 is a section on the line {iw-5 of' Fig. 4t.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, vit will be seen that a side frame 10 may include jaws 11, between which a journal box 12 is seated. As shown in Fig, 2, the journal box may be provided with lateral lips or guides 13 between which the box is fitted. By this means the box is held against separation in a sidcwise or endwise direction, but is not held against vertical separation. ln order to provide against this contingency l cast on the top of the journal box a boss 14l hollowed out as at 15 to accommodate the head of a vertical bolt or pin 16. rlliis bolt or pin extends upwardly through an aperture 17 in the side frame and may be held by means of a key 18 serted through an opening 19 in thaweb o the side frame. In practice the bolt 16 is inserted within the hollow boss 14; of the journal box and the box then locked in the position shown in Fig. 1. When in this position the bolt can# not be moved in a lateral direction. ln the construction shown in Figs. 4 and 5, the journal box Q0 is provided with a boss 21 on its upper surface an opening being formed therethrough for the passage of a bolt or pin 22. This bolt is insertible through the inside of the journal box, the head of the bolt beine; countersunk in the enlarged recess Q. rlhe bolt is held by means of'a key 24 as shown in Figs. 1 to 3. If desired, of course, a nut may be substituted for the key shown in each construction. The space 25 surrounding the boss 21 is provided merely :For the purpose of lightening the construction. This is likewise true in the form shown in Fig. 1.
An, advantage in the construction shown herein is that the bolt is almost entirely inclosed and cannot become disengaged by accident or without lifting the frame suflicient to disengage the journal box therefrom.
Obviously the construction shown is capable of considerable modication and such n'uiditication as is within the vscope .of my claims l consider within the spirit of my invention.
'l' claim:
1. ln a truck, the combination of a side frame, a journal box, said frame having an aperture in the plane of said box, and a separate vertical bolt carried by said box and adapted to cooperate with said aperture and maintain said box and frame against separation, substantially as described.
2. ln a truck, theA combination of a cast ,side frame, a journal box interlocked with said trame, and a separate vertical bolt con- .necting the Jframe and box, substantially as described.
3. ln combination, a cast side 4frame having' jaws, a journal box mounted between said jaws, a vertical bolt interlocked with said journal box, said bolt extending up wardly through an aperture in said frame, and means carried by said bolt for locking the same in position.
e. in combination a cast side frame having jaws, a journal box mounted between Said jaws, said box being provided with an my name in the presence of two subscribing a'pertured boss, a boit the head of which is Witnesses. v
A mounted in said boss, said. bolt extending upwardly through an aperture in said frame 5 and securing said box and frame against Wtnessem separation, substantiall as described. JOHN A. LAMONT, In witness whereof I ave hereunto signed W.' G. LANGENBAGH.
ERIC W. PALMQUIST.
