BATTERY HOLDER.
Application filed April 30, 1926. Serial No. 105,890.
This invention relates to holders for storage batteries during their manipulation, as when the plates are to be removed from the jars, or when the jars are to be removed from a the case.
It is well known that in the repairing of storage batteries difficulty arises in dislodging and removing the plates from thejars,
and difficulty also is encountered in removm ing the jars from the cases, due to the presence of the sealing compound employed for closing the joints between the jars and the case and the edges of the jars, the diificulty being in a measure due to the fact that there is no anchorage for the case when pull is exerted on the parts that are to be removed.
It is an object of this invention to produce an anchoring device which will serve to hold or clamp a case while the partsare manipulated for thepurposes heretofore stated; and it is a further object of this invention to provide a novel device capable of use in con junction with battery cases of ditherent lengths and heights in order that a single apparatus may be manipulated in conjunction with different batteries.
With the foregoing and other objects in view. the invention consists in the details of construction, and in the arrangement andcombination of parts to be hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed.
In describing the invention in detail, reference will be hadto the accompanying drawings forming part of this application, wherein like characters denote corresponding parts in the several views, and in ,which Figure 1 illustrates a View in elevation. partly in section, of a device embodying the invention;
Figure 2 illustrates a plan view thereof;
Figure 3 illustrates an end view; and
Figure 4 illustrates a sectional view on-the line 4-4 of Fig- 2.
In the present embodiment of the inven tion. a base 6 is provided having depending marginal flanges 7. on which the base is sup ported. and the said base has a central elongated slot 8.
A standard or post 9 has an angularlv disposed foot 10 applied to the base and secured thereto by appropriate fastenings 1| such as rivets or the like, and this standard is located at or near one end of the slot. The standard is slotted vertically as shown at 12, and'a clamping bolt 13 is slidable therein,
and between the covers of the plates the said bolt being associated with a plate let that is slidable at the side of the standard, and the plate has an angularly disposed end 15 which is intended to engage the upper edge or" a battery case; it being understood that the plate is held at differentpositions of adjustment by a nut 16 on the clamping bolt 13.
Another standard or post It? has an angularly disposed foot 18 in which a bolt 19 extends, the said bolt also projecting through the slot 8 and provided with a head 20 whose diameter is greater than thewidth of the slot 8, so that the standard 17 may be adjusted longitudinally of the slot and secured at diflerent positions of adjustment with relation to the standard 9. The standard 17 has a slot 21 in which a clamping bolt 22 is slidable, and the clamping bolt 22 is associated with a plate 23 having an angularly disposed end 24 which may engage the upper edge of a battery case.
The two plates 14 and 23 when properly anchored will serve to hold the battery case. and if desired, the base may be secured to a floor by fastenings such as lag screws 25, although the base is sufficiently long to permit the operator to stand on it at its ends and usually the weight or" the operator will suffice to retain the base stationary while the manipulation is progressing, so that the inventor does not wish to be limited with respect to the feature of anchoring the base or having it free in order that it can be moved from place to place for use.
I claim in a battery holder, a base having a slot therein. a standard having an angularly disposed foot secured thereto at the end of the slot, said standard having a slot therein, a clamping bolt in the slot, a plate to which the clamping bolt is applied. means for holding the clamping bolt at different positions of adjustment. a battery case engaging part on said plate. a standard coacting with the first mentioned standard and having an anqularlv disposed foot. sl dable on the base. a clamping bolt therein sl dable in the slot of the base. the second mentioned standard having a vertical slot therein, a clamping bolt in the slot. a plate in wh ch the bol is secured, means for clamping thebolt at different positions of adjustment. and a battery case engaging part on the plate.
