LINK FOR CHAIN-GRATE MECHANICAL STOKERS.
Application filed. May 26. 1925, Serial No. 32,880, and in Great Britain August 15, 1924.
This invention relates to mechanical stokers for furnaces and more particularly to.
over, when broken the complete link must be discarded.
The above mentioned disadvantages have in part been overcome by fitting detachable tops to the links, but such fitting takes time and the detachable tops soon become loose. In accordance with the present invention these disadvantages are wholly avoided by making the web portion of the link of steel plate or bar and casting thereon an upper portion of refractory metal having the usual form adapted to support the fuel, the web portion being placed in moulding sand or in a chill for the purpose.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which- Fig. 1 shows one form of the improved link Fig. 2 shows the steel plate which forms the foundation of the link;

As shown, a is a plate of steel or the like formed with apertures b by which the fire bar element 0 may be anchor-ed thereto and with apertures d for the passage of the link rods. The member a is placed in a sand mould or ch ill suited to the form of the stoker link to be produced, and molten iron is then poured into the sand mould and run on to the member a, whereby a stoker link such as illustrated in Fig. 1 is produced, the element or portion 0 being anchored to the member a by means of the metal passing through the apertures b. The bosses e for the link rods are at the same time cast around the apertures (Z.
In Fig. 3, (4 denotes the steel plate and b the apertures by which the fire bar element 0 may be anchored thereto. The apertures for the passage of the link rods are indicated at d and 6 denotes the bosses for the link rods cast in one with the element 0 In Fig. 4, (i denotes the steel plate and b the apertures formed in the steel plate, (2*

In Fig. 5, a is the steel plate, 6 the apertures formed in the steel plate, 0 the fire bar element, d the passages for the link rods and e the bosses for the link rods cast in one with the element 0 Although in each of the forms illustrated the bosses for the link rods are shown as cast in the course of formation of the stoker links, they may be stamped in forming the steel plate or may consist of separate collars adapted to embrace the link rods.
Although the cast part is shown as anchored to the plate by metal passing through apertures in the plate, the cast part may be held to the plate by its contraction in cooling or by roughing the portion of the plate on which it is cast, or by any other method.
As shown, the cast iron part of each stoker link may be formed with inclined or vertical flutes or grooves permitting passage of air between adjacent links in the chain.
When renewal of the upper portion of a link is required, the top of the plate a is cleaned and a new upper portion cast on.
I claim 1. A link for mechanical stokers of furnaces comprising a steel body portion, said body portion apertured for the passage of link rods and formed with apertures along one edge and a heat resisting portion of refractory material cast around the apei tured edge of the body port-ion and a boss forming portion cast around the apertures for the link rods and anchored through such apertures to the body portion.
2. A link for mechanical stokers of furnaces comprising a steel body portion, said body portion apertured for the passage of link rods and formed with apertures along one edge and adjacent the link-rods passage therein, and a heat resisting portion of re- 'fractory material cast around the apertured edge of the body portion and a boss forming portion cast around the apertures for the link rods and anchored through such apertures to the body portion.
