PERMUTATION PADLOCK.
Application filed February 19, 1923, Serial No. 620,067.
The primary object of our said invention resides in the provision of a padlock that is comparatively simple of construction, inexpensive of manufacture and such a lock that is a substantial improvement over similar types now upon the market, the same consisting of relatively few parts, and these so corelated as to reduce the liability of derangement to a minimum.
The nature and advantages of the invention will be readily apparent when the following detailed description is read in connection with the accompanying drawings, the invention residing in the construction, combination, and arrangement of parts as claimed.
In the drawings forming part of this application, like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views, and wherein:
Figure 1-is an elevational view of a lock constructed in accordance with our invention.
Figure 2is a vertical transverse cross sectional view thereof.
Figure 3-is a transverse cross sectional view upon the line 3-8 of Figure 1 and Figure l -is a top plan view of a ring member employed in conjunction with our invention.
Referring to the drawings in detail, our device constitutes the provision of an upper and lower plate member 5 and 6 which 'may be, and preferably are of annular shape. Between these plates 5 and 6 is a spacing block 7 of cylindrical formation. this block together with the plates being secured together by a central rivet 8 engaging through openings in the plates 5 and 6 and a vertical bore in said spacing block. The block 7 is of lesser diameter than the diameter of said plates 5 and 6 and surrounding this block and between the upper and lower plate members are freely rotatable rings 9. The inner walls of each of these rings 9 are formed with a central annular shoulder 10, these shoulders being in turn formed with a curved notch 11. The outer face of each ring 9 has'impressed or otherwise formed thereon indicating numerals from 1 to 10 inclusive, and it is to be understood that the said notches 11 of each of these rings are to be in different relative positions upon their rings with respect to the indicating numbers thereon.
At diametrically opposite points of the se- Renewed March 12, 1926.
curing'riVetS), the spacing block 7 is formed with vertical channel ways or openings 12 and 13 respectively and by a consideration of Figure 3, it will at once be apparent that the channel way 12 is in the form of an almost complete circle, while the channel way 13 is in the form of a half circle.
In alinement with the channel ways 12 and 13 of said spacing block 7, the upper plate 5 is formed With openings 14, whilst the inner surface of the lower plate 6 is, also formed with alined annular-shaped depressions 15.
1 When the said notches 11 of each of the rings 9 are positioned adjacent the channel way 13 of the spacing block 7 and in alinement with the respective openings 14 in the top plate 5, the lock may receive its cooper ating shackle 16. This shackle constitutes the provision of a pair of leg members 17 and 18 integrally joined together at their upper ends by a curved portion 19. The leg 18 of this shackle is formed with spaced notches 20 of a distance apart equivalent to the distance of the flanges 10 of the rings 9.
It will be at once apparent that when the shackle 16 is inserted within the lock as shown in Figures 1, 2 and 3 upon turning, the rings 9, the notches 11, will unregister from the notches 20 in the said leg 14 of the shackle 16 for consequently engaging the flanges 11 of the rings with the shackle notches for thereby rigidly maintaining this shackle in a locked position.
In view of the above description, it is believed that we have provided a permutation padlock that is of comparatively simple con struction', and is substantial improvement over similar locks, with which we are now familiar and although we have disclosed this lock as embodying the provision of but three locking rings, it is nevertheless to be understood that this number may be increased without de )arting from the s oirit and sco e l of the invention as claimed.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by LettersPatent is:
A permutation lock consisting essentially of spaced centrally apertured plates, one of which is provided with circular openings passing transversely therethrough and the other with circular depressions of corresponding diameter and aligned with the said openings, said openings and depressions off the center of the plate, and the bottom walls of the said depression being spaced from the outer surface of the plate having the depressions, a spacing block solid and of circular cross section interposed between the plates and provided at opposite points in its sides With channels which register With the openings and the depressions in the plates, one of said channels being arcuate and describing slightly more than a half circle in cross section, and the other channel describing" substantially a complete circle in cross section Within the perimeter vof the spacing block, rings surrounding the spacing block and disposed in parallelism be tween the plates and provided at their inner edges with integral annular inwardly extending reduced portions, each reduced portion having an arcuate notch adapted to register with the openings and depressions ofi' the center of the plates, a shackle meniber provided with legs of uniform circular cross section adapted to enter the openings and depresions oli the center of the plates, one of the legs of the shackle member being provided with notches adapted to receive said annular reduced portions at the inner edges of the rings when the rings are turned with relation to the spacing block and plates, and the other leg of the shackle being completely disposed Within the perimeter of the circular spacing block and the inner edges of the annular reduced portions on the rings, and a central bolt occupying the said center apertures of the plate and having integral heads directly above the upper plate and di rectly below the lower plate, respectively.
In testimony whereof we atiix our sigmrtures.
