Description

JOHN T. EATER, OF "LUCAMA, NORTH CAEQLINA.
NEEfiLE.
Application filed December 30, 1925. Serial 330. 75,434.
This invention relates to a needle, the general object of the invention being to provide means whereby the needle can be easily threaded by forming a cut in the same which extends from the eye through one side of the needle.
Another object of the invention is to provide the needle with a resilient part which permits the out part to be separated, for the entranc of the thread, after which the parts are returned to normal position to hold the thread in the eye and prevent the needle from catching in the material.
This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claim.
In describing my invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which:'
Figure l is an elevation of the improved needle. v
Figure 2 is a section on line 22 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a section on line 3-3 of Figure i...
As shown in these views, the needle 5 is formed with two parallel cuts 6 and 7 and a cross cut 8 which form a tongue 9 in the central part of the needle. The free end of this tongue is cut off so as to provide an eye 10 for receiving the thread. The cut 7 is of greater length than the out 6, and said cut 7 forms a spring part llwhich permits handing of the pointed part of the needle so that the walls of the out 6 can be separated, this cut extending through one side of the needle, as shown at 6'. Thus thread can be passed through the cut 6 until it enters-the eye 10, so that the needle can be threaded very easily and by a person with poor eyesight, as it is not necessary to pass the thread through a small eye, as in needles now on the market. The walls of the outer end of the-cut 6 are rounded, as shown, to prevent these portions from hanging in the cloth being sewed.
\Vith this needle, it is simply necessary to draw the thread through the cut 6 and 6 into the eye, the spring part 11 permitting the parts to separate sufficiently to permit the thread to pass. The needle is also provided with opposing grooves 12 which extend longitudinally of the needle and increases the resiliency of the part 11 as it weakens that part of the needle at the junction of the part 11 with the body of the needle. Th grooves reduce the thickness of the tongue 9..
It is thought fromthe foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of my invention will be readily apparent.
I desire it to be understood that I may make changes in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall within the scope of the appended claim.
That I claim is 2- A needle having a pair of parallel cuts in its body which extend longitudinally of the body with a cross cut connecting the parallel cuts together, said cuts forming a tongue, the end of which is cut ofi to form an eye, a notch in one side of the needle communicating with one of the cuts and oppositely arranged grooves in the needle which reduce the thickness of the tongue.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
JOHN T. earns.
