Dredging-Box. $10 160.66} Patented March9,l875.

UNITED STATES PATENT Grrron.
JOSEPH S. FIELD, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN DREDGlNG-BOXES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No, 160,663, dated March 9, 1875; application filed December 22, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH S. FIELD, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented an Improvement in Dredging or Spice Boxes, of which the following is a specification:
Spice and dredging boxes have been made with a perforated cover and a turning plate having triangular openings positioned radially, and this plate serves to open or close the groups of perforations made in the cover. In constructing spice-boxes of this character difficulty has been experienced in retaining the plates so closely together as to prevent the spice or flour working in between the plates and obstructing the movement, and the box is not closed tightly to retain the material when constructed as aforesaid.
My invention is made for firmly securing the turning plate to the perforated cap, and with sufficient friction from the contact of the surfaces to keep the plate in the position to which it may be turned.
1n the drawing, Figure 1 is a vertical section of the box complete. Fig. 2 is a plan of the same. Fig. 3 represents the cover, the turning plate, and the button separately. Fig. 4. is a section with the turning plate secured within the cover, and Fig. 5 shows the parts ready for the button to be attached to the turning plate.
The box a, cover I), and its rim 0 are of any usual or desired character. The cover b is perforated with holes in groups or in rows, that are positioned radially, and. the turning plate at is perforated in a similar manner, or made with radial slots of an elongated or triangular shape, as heretofore usual. The cover I) is perforated in the center, and the turning plate at has a hollow central projection, 0, made upon it, to pass through a hole in the center of the cover I). The edges of the hollow projection are turned over upon the cover, as seen in Figs. 1, 4, and 5, to firmly secure the turning plate to the cover, and the surfaces of the sheet metal are by these means kept closely in contact; but the plate 01 can be turned by the button a, or its equivalent. In order to connect the button a and the turning plate d, it is only necessary to insert a drop of solder into the hollow projection from the under side, which solder extends to the said turning button, and firmly connects the parts, so that the turning plate beneath the cover can be moved by the button above the cover to open or close the groups or ranges of holes.
I claim as my invention- 1. The perforated cover I) of the dredging or spice box, provided with a central hole receiving an open projection, c, that is bent up from the sheet metal of the turning plate at, which projection is bent over the sheet metal of the cover to attach the turning plate thereto, substantially as set forth.
2. The spice-box having a perforated cover and a turning plate to open and close said perforations, and provided with a button, n, which is set into and soldered to the edges of the opening in the turning plate (I, substantially as set forth.
Signed by me this 18th day of December, A. D. 1874.
