Description

Nov. 9 1925,
' Filed Sept. 12, 1925" INVENTOR I I b ATTORNE Patented Nov. 9, 1926.
MAX NORMAN, F BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
COMBINED SPOON AND STRAW CONSTRUCTION.
AppIication filed September 12, 1925. Serial No. 55,958.
This invention relates to spoons and particularly to spoons such as are commonly employed in serving ice cream sodas and like beverages, and particularly to a combination spoon and straw construction or a spoon constructed to provide means for mounting and supporting a straw in connection therewith; and the object of the invention is to provide a spoon structure with means for receiving and supportinga straw in connection therewith, whereby the straw may be mounted in connection with and removed from the spoon at will if desired, or whereby, when the spoon is composed of paper or other inexpensive material, both the spoon and straw may be discarded after the joint use thereof; and with this and other objects in view, the invention consists in a device of the class and for the purpose specified which is simple in construction efficient in use, and which is constructed as hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are desig nated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which Fig. l is a perspective view of one for of spoon made according to my invention and illustrating a straw mounted in connection therewith.
Fig. 2 is a cross section on the line 22 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 1 but show ing only part of the construction, and show ing a modification.
Fig. 4 is a view similar to Fig. 3 but showing another modification.
Fig. 5 is a. detail view of a part of the construction shown in Fig. 4 in difierent position; and,
Fig. 6 is a side edge view of the spoon illustrating another method of mounting a. straw in connection therewith.
My invention consists primarily in the provision of means in a spoon of any kind or class or formed from any desired material, for supporting a straw in connection therewith and particularly in the manufacture of spoons such as are employed in the serving of ice cream sodas and similar beverages where straws are used in conjunction with spoons in the removal of liquid from the container. 7
In carrying my invention into effect, I
have shown in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawing, one form of spoon comprising a head portion 10, shank portion 11 and handle portion 12. The shank portion ofthe spoon or the shank and handle portion is provided with upwardly extending loop members 13 and 14 pressed from the material of the spoon to form substantially cylindrical bearings or supports for receiving and supporting a straw 15. The straw 15 is preferably of greater length than the lengthof the spoon and may be moved longitudinally thereof within the bearings or keepers 1314 to move one end of the straw into different positions to facilitate the use of the head of the spoon or to extend the spoon sufficiently to remove the liquid contents of a container, especiallyin the use of a combined article of the class specified in the service of ice cream sodas, it being understood that the spoon proper may be used for removing the ice cream while the straw may be conveniently used for removing the soda or liquid contents of the beverage.
t will be understood that the spoon structure may be formed from any desired material including paper or like substance treated to permit of the use herein intended; and in the event that the spoon is constructed of paper or similar inexpensive material, it will be apparent that the same together with the straw, may be discarded after the use thereof. In this way, I provide a combined article having sanitary properties. However, in the use of a metallic or other substance in the construction of the spoon, and in contemplating the re-use of the spoon, it will be understood that the straws are attached and detached therefrom at will.
In Fig. 3 of the drawing, I have shown a slight modification, in which I substitute for the bearings 13 14:, bearings 16 which are molded or otherwise formed integral with the shank of a spoon 17 and holes 18 are formed therein to receive the straws as will be apparent and in Fig. 3 of the draw ing, only one of the bearings is shown. The same result may also be accomplished by providing the side edges of the shank 19 of the spoon with projecting portions 20 and 21 which may be folded inwardly upon the shank to form a cylindrical keeper 22 for receiving and supporting a straw 15. It will also be understood that instead of mounting the straw 15 upon the upper face of the shank of a spoon, the same may also be mounted upon the lower face of the shank 23 of a spoon by providing keepers 2i and 25 of any desired form and construction on the lower face of the shank, or shank and handle portion in connection with which the straw 15 may be mounted, and the spoon or shank of the spoon may be curved as seen at 26 if desired.
From the foregoing, it will be apparent that my invention is not limited to any particular shape or construction of spoon nor the material employed in the construction of the same, nor am I necessarily limited to any specific means for mounting and supporting a straw in connection therewith, and various other changes in and modifications of the construction herein shown and descrihed may be made within the scope of the appended claims without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A paper spoon having comparatively wide and flat shank and handle portions, and a head portion at one end of the shank portion, and means formed from the material of said shank and handle portions and at spaced intervals thereon for supporting a straw longitudinally of the shank and handle portionsof the spoon.
2. A paper spoon having comparatively wide and flat shank and handle portions and a head portion at one end of the shank portion means formed from the material oi said shank and handle portions and at spaced intervals thereon for supporting a straw longitudinally of the shank and handle portions of the spoon, and the length of the shank and handle portions of the spoon being materially less than the length of a straw of conventional form.
3. A paper spoon of the class described, the shank and handle portions of which are provided with spaced keepers formed from the material of the spoon and in which a straw is adapted to be supported longitudinally of the shank and handle portions of the spoon.
In testimony that I'claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name this 10th day of Sept, 1925.
