This invention relates to pneumatic tools, but more particularly to a back head construction for pneumatic hammers and the like, having a cylinder, a reciprocating pis- 5 ton, which constitutes the hammer, and a fluid actuated distributing valve.
The objects of the invention are to improve upon the construction of the back head parts of the riveting hammer which are held to gether by the usual side bolts and secure a construction in which the strain is substantially removed from the bolts and securing lugs so that breakage is reduced.
Further objects will hereinafter appear and the invention is illustrated in one of its preferred forms in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is alongitudinal side elevation, partly broken away, of a pneumatic hammer having my improved construction, and
Figure 2 is a transverse sectional view on the line 22 of Figure 1 looking in the direction of the arrows.
For convenience of illustration, the improved back head construction is shown applied to a pneumatic hammer having a distributing valve, like that shown in my U. S. Patent No. 1,528,781, granted, March 10, 1925, for pneumatic hammer. Since the 30 valve itself is constructed like the valve of said patent and functions in the same way, and further, because said valve forms no part of the present invention, it will not be described in detail, and, for simplicity of illustration, only so much of the ports and passages are shown to disclose the improved back head construction.
Referring to the drawings, the pneumatic hammer comprises the cylinder A having a bore B in. which the pneumatic hammer piston C is adapted to reciprocate and impart blows of impact to a rivet set or other tool (not shown) but adapted to be held within the forward end of the cylinder by any suitable means. The handle F is secured to the cylinder as by means of the bolts G and forms a portion of the back head of the machine and pressure fluid from the inlet H adapted to be controlled by a hand-operated valve (not shown) actuated by the lever J is supplied to the machine through the main supply passage K as in my former patent.
The head block L in which the hollow cylindrical fiuid actuated differential distribution valve P is guided extends into the rearward end of the cylinder A and also has a laterally extending portion adapted to bear upon the rearward end face of the cylinder. The body portion of the handle F bears directly upon the head block L valve box so that the bolts G hold the parts securely together. Relative movement between these three abutting parts is prevented and they are not placed under any considerable initial strain when the bolts are tightened so that breakage due to vibration is greatly lessened.
The hollow sleeve portion Q of the head block L, as shown, extends into the rearward end of the cylinder but does not actually seat against the shoulder R within the cylin dcr owing to the provision of sufficient clearance atthis point. The cylinder is provided with the rearward lugs S and the head block is provided with similar lugs T overlying and adapted to bear upon the cylinder lugs S. The body portion of the handle F is similarly formed with lugs U bearing upon the head block lugs T and the bolts G pass through these three sets of lugs for holding the parts together.
The sleeve portion Q ofthe head block forms a portion of the valve chamber for the valve P, the remainder of said valve cham her being formed directly by the walls of the cylinder A. The rearward end of said head block has an end wall V and extends into acavity W in the handle, the space X between the handle and the rearward end of the head block forming a passage for the supply of motive fluid.
I claim:
1. A pneumatic tool back head construction, comprising a cylinder, a handle therefor, a body portion on the handle having a cavity, a head block having a wall at its rearward end and extending at its forward end into the cylinder, the rearward end of the head block extending into the handle cavity, said head block forming a portion of a valve chamber, the remainder of the valve chamber being formed directly by the cylinder walls, laterally extending lugs integral with the head block intermediate the ends thereof and interposed between the cylinder and the handle body portion, and bolts for securing said parts together.
2. A pneumatic tool back head construction, comprising a cylinder having an enlarged rearward bore and an internal shoulder, a handle having a body portion formed the body portion of the handle seating fipon with a cavity, a hollow head block formed the laterally extending portion of the head with a laterally extending portion adapted blockya valve guided partly in the head to bear upon the rearward end face of the block andpartlyin'the cylinder,' and bolts 5 cylinder, the forward portion of the head passing through the cylinder head block and 15 block extending into the enlarged bore of handle for holding the parts together. the cylinder without seatingagainst the said In-testimony whereof I have signed this internal shoulder, the rearward portion of specification. the head block having an end closingwall 10 and extending into the said handle cavity, GAID HENRY PEGK.
