Description

NTTEE STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GIDEON HUNTINGTON, OF TORONTO, CANADA.
IMPROVEMENT IN WASHING-MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 160,597, dated March 9, 1875; application filed January 4, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, GIDEoN HUNTINGTON, of Toronto, in the Province of Ontario and Dominion of Canada, have invented a new and Improved Washing-Machine, of which the following is a specification:
In the accompanying drawing, Figure l represents a side elevation, partly in section, of my improved Washing-machine; and Fig. 2, a vertical transverse section of the same on the line c c, Fig. l.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The invention is an improvement in the class of washing-machines in which a clothes-holding open-Work drum or cylinder is arranged to rotate in a tub or vessel set over a furnace.
The invention consists in operating the clothes-drum by means of a vertical rocking standard, a connecting-bar, cords, and a pulley, which latter is mounted on the drumshaft, as hereinafter described.
In the drawing, Arepresents the cylindrical clothes-drum, which turns in suitable bearings of an inclosing casing or boiler, B, With detachable top part B', having flange a. The metallic drum-heads O are connected by rounds or bars having small interstices between them. The heads O Iare made of a metallic supporting-frame, O', With radial arms, central shaft, and circumferential rim. Atop section, A', of the drum is hinged to the main section and locked by-spring-latches E or other similar locking devices. The boiler is placed on a heater or furnace, F, With sliding damper F', (covering openings a or c, according to its positiom) for regulating the iire.
The drum is reciprocated by a rocking standard, G, a horizontal bar, H, pivoted thereto, and straps or cords I, which are Wound in reversed directions around the pulley J of the drum-shaft, and attached to said bar H. By applying the foot to the rocker the standard G is vibrated, and the desired motion imparted to the drum.
What I claim is- In a washing-machine, the combination ot' the vibrating rocker-standard G, horizontal bar H, cords I, pulley J, and drum A, all combined and operating as shown and described.
GIDEON HUNTINGTON.
