Description

(ModeL) G. P. MURKEN.
WASHING MACHINE.
- 246,1 No I 88 fif latenmd Aug 23 1881 NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE F. MURKEN, OF MIDDLEBURY, INDIANA.
WASHING-MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 246,188, dated August 23, 1881.
(Model) To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GEORGE F. MURKEN, of Middlebury, in the county of Elkhart, and in the State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Washing-Ma chines; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
This invention relates to certain improvements in washing-machines; and it has forits object to provide an apparatus that will be simple in construction, that will cleanse the clothes with expedition, and that will cause but little 'wear to the same. This object I accomplish by the apparatus illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents a side elevation of the machine with a portion of the tub broken away, showing the interior; and Fig. 2, a horizontal sectional view of the beater.
The letter A represents a tub or box, which may be cylindrical, rectangular, or of any other suitable shape. The said tub or box is provided with a hinged top, B, to which is secured a frame, 0, in which is journaled the shaft of a bevel-gear wheel, D, which intermeshes with a similar gear-wheel, E, sitting in a recess, F, in the top of the tub or box. The said wheel E is mounted upon a vertical shaft, G, which has attached to it a transverse bar, H, provided with downwardly-extending arms I, to which are secured the double concave sheets K of zinc, galvanized iron, or other suitable material, perforated as shown.
The apparatus is put in operation by oscillating the lever back and forth, which oscillates the heaters. Owing-to the concavity of said beaters they will operate more efficiently and with less wear to the clothes than otherwise. The concavity of the sides of the beaters serves to catch the clothes and carry them as the heaters are rotated, and prevents them from being thrown violently against the sides of the tub, which would occur if the heaters were fiat, thus preventing wear, while a circulation of water is insured through the clothes.
Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
In combination with the tub or box, the vertical shaft having a horizontal arm provided with downward-extending arms and double concave beaters, with mechanism for oscillating the same, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature, in presence of two witnesses, this 6th day of June, 1881.
GEORGE F. MURKEN.
