Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPHINE BINNEY, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
. IMPROVEMENT IN PICTURE-HOLDERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 160,564, dated March 9:1875; application filed April 20, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J osEPHINE BINNEY, of Boston, (district of Roxbury,) in the county of Suffolk and State ot Massachusetts, have invented certain Improvements in Picture-Holders, of which the tbllowingis a specification:
This instrument is intended for the support of pictures or engravings of Various sizes, in an inclined position, upon the top of a table, piano-forte, book-case, or other article of furniture.
The picture, or other article to be held, is placed in an inclined position, the top resting against the wall ot' an apartment, or any fixed object, While the bottom is supported by the holder, and prevented from sliding forward.
Figure I is a plan or top View. Fig. II is a side view. Fig. III is a side View, showing the position of the holder upon a table with a picture in place.
The holder is made of sheet-brass or other metal, and is of various sizes, suited to the weight and size of the picture it supports.
A sheet of metal, about four or live inches long and one inch in width, is bent near the middle at right angles, as at O in the drawings, t'orming a vertical arm, A, and a horizontal arm,B. About one inch of the latter is turned upward from the upright rest D. The part G extends horizontally beyond the arm B, and in the same plane, about one or two inches. This projection, and also the ledge or rest D, Which show in front of the picture,
are ornamented or formed :in any fanciful design. In Fig. III the holder A B D G is placed at `the back side of the table T 5 the picture P rests against the wall W ot' the room, just behind it, its lower edge being prevented from sliding forward by the rest D. The horizontal thrust is sustained by the vertical arm A of the holder. The part G, that extends in front of the ledge D, prevents the arms A B from rising. Were it not for this a picturein contact with the ledge D at the point I would lift the holder from its place.
By the use of this instrument, pictures may be placed and held at any required angle, instead ot' standin gin a nearly vertical position, as is usually the case.
For heavy paintings, two holders may be used, one at each edge of the frame.
Vhat I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
As an article of manufacture, a pictureholder composed of the arms A B, at right angles with each other, the rest D, and the projecting piece G, all as and for the purpose set forth.
J OSEPHINE BINNEY. [L. s] In presence oil- JOHN M. BATCHELDER, SAML. BATGHELDER, Jr.
