R. L. HOLLINGSWORTH WAVE MOTOR Filed Dec. 23. 1922 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 INVENTOR Patented ov. 2, 1926.
ROBERT L. I-IOLLINGSIVORTI-I,
raar
OF I-IATTIESBURG, MISSISSIPPI.-
WAVE MOTOR.
Application filed December The object of my said invention is to.improve wave motors of the vertically guided iioat type by the provision of simple and highly e'iicient means for converting the reciprocate y motion of a float actuated by waves in a body of water, into a rotary motion.
To the attainment of the foregoing, the invention consists in the improvement as hereinafter described and definitely claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this speciiicatiom- Figure 1 is a side elevation of the wave motor constituting the Vpreferred embodinient of my invention.
Figure 2 is an end elevation of the motor.
Figure 3 is a top plan view of the motor.
Figure 4 is a horizontal section taken in the plane indicated by the line 4-4 of Figure 1, lookingdownwardly.
Similar numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in all of the views of the drawings. Y
Among other elements my novel motor comprises a main frame adapted to be fixed in a body of water and including uprights 1 of angular form in horizontal section, and a platform 2 superimposed upon and fixed to the upper ends of the said uprights. The said main frame also comprises a horizontal bar 3 interposed between and fixed to the uprights 1 at one end of the frame.
Arranged between and loosely fitting in the uprights 1 is a movable iioat 4 on which are end anti-friction wheels 5 and side antifriction wheels 6, the said wheels 5 and 6 being arranged to bear against the vertical edges of the uprights 1 of angular form in cross-section so as to render easy the up and down movements of the iioat and to prevent undue wear of the oat and uprights 1 incident to the movements of the float. y
Appropriately fixed to and rising from the iioat 4 is a standard 7 and pivotally connected to the said standard, and prefer- Y ably capable of adjustment in virtue of its 3, 1922, Serial No. 608,691.
walking beam 10 is adapted to be adjustably positioned to better accommodate the working parts of the mechanism to the size of the waves in which the float 4 is disposed.
Mounted on the platform 2 is a shaft 13 to which is fixed a ratchet wheel 14. The said ratchet wheel 14 is opposed to a `dog 15 designed to prevent retrograde rotation of the said shaft 13, the said dog 15 being backed by a spring strip 15X of considerable length, supported on an inclined pillar block 1G, and appropriately fixed at its outer end 17 thereto. Pivoted to the shaft 13 and straddling the ratchet wheel 14 is a lever 13 by which is carried a spring pressed detent 19, arranged on movement of the lever 18 in one direction, downwardly or upwardly, to turn the ratchet wheel 14 and the c'haft 13, and also arranged to ride idly over the teeth of the ratchet wheel 14 on reverse motion of lever 18. Interposed `be tween and pivotally connected to the lever 18 and the outer arm of the walking beam 10 is a link 20. Manifestly when the float 4 is moved upwardly and downwardly by the action of waves and gravity, the walking beam 10 will be powerfully rocked or oscillated with the result that considerable leverage will be exerted on the shaft 13, and said shaft will be powerfully turned step by step in one direction.
Any preferred means may be employed for taking power from the shaft 13, the means illustrated for said purpose being made up of a pulley 21 fixed on the shaft, a counter-shaft 22 on the platform 2 and equipped with a pulley 23, and a belt 24 n'iounted on. and connecting the pulleys 21 Aand 23.
Itwvill be apparentfrom the foregoing that my novel wave motor is at once simple in construction and reliable in operation; also, that the wave motor is free from delicate parts and is therefore well adapted to withstand the rough usuage to which wave motors are ordinarily subjected.
I have entered into a detailed description of the construction and relative arrangement of the parts embraced in the present and preferred embodiment of my invention in order to impart a full, clear and exact understanding of the said embodiment. I do not desire, however, to be understood as confining myself to the specific construction and relative arrangement of parts inasmuch as in the future practice of the invention various changed and modifications may be made such as fall within the scope of my invention as defined in my appended claim.
Having described my invention what I claim and desire vto secure by Letters Patent,
A wave motor comprising a plurality of spaced up-rights, a platform mounted upon the 11p-rights, a power ehaft supported upon the platform, horizontal bar between certain of the 11p-rights, a movable ioat within the tip-rights, a vertical standard carrie'dfb'y the io'at, a link having its lower end adjustably connected with the standard, a walking beam adjustably and pivotally mounted upon the horizontal bar with its inner' end pivotally connected with the up per end of the link, a lever having one end rection upon downward movement of they lever, a spring` pressed dogretaining said ratchet against movement, and a second link forming loose connection between the outer end; of the lever and the outer end of the walking; beam whereby vertical movement ot' the float between the up-rights in one direction will impart movement to said shaft.
