Description

Elm-733,304. PATENTED JULY 7, 1903. C. W. VLIET. CURRENT MOTOR.
APPLICATION rum) rm. 21, 1903,
no MODEL.
UNITED STATES:
Patented July 7, 190a.
CHARLES WV. VLIET, OF GLENWOOD SPRINGS, COLORADO.
CURRENT-MOTOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part Of Letters Patent N0. 733,304, dated July 7, 1903.
Application filed February 21, 1903. Serial No. 144,459. No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that 1, CHARLES W. VLIET, a citizen of the United States, residing at Glenwood Springs, in the county of Garfield and State of Colorado, have inventednew and useful Improvements in Current Motors, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to' current-motors, and has for its object to construct a motor which can be anchored in a stream and be driven by high or low water.
The simple and novel construction employed by me in carrying out my invention is fully described and claimed in this specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective of my motor. Fig. 2 is a transverse section of the same. Fig. 3 is a detail of one of the screws.
Like numerals of reference designate like parts in the different views ofthe drawings.
The numeral 1 designates an open crib formed of cross-bars 2 and uprights 3. This crib is designed to be firmly anchored in the bed of a stream of rapidly-running water.
Mounted within the crib 1 is a carriage 4, comprising uprights 5 and cross-bars 6. Vertical guide-rods 7 are supported by the crib 1 and engage apertured arms 8 on the carriage, and thereby secure the carriage 4 against all but vertical movement. A float 9 is mounted on the top of the carriaget and serves to lift the carriage 4 as the water rises.
The power-generating part of my motor consists of two screws 10, extending parallel to each other and comprising shafts 11 and blades 12, formed in pairs, and of a single piece of sheet metal pressed into a cylinder 13, which surrounds the shaft 11. The blades 12 may be located in alinement, so that the water can pass from one to the other, or small inclined blades 15 may be mounted in the intervals to deflect the water to the next blade.
The shafts 11 are journaled in cross-bars 16 and carry gears 17, which mesh with a gear 18, secured on a crank shaft 19, which is adapted to be connected to some machine to be driven, such as a pump. When in use, my motor is located with the shafts parallel to the current.
I do not wish to be limited as to details of construction, as these may be modified in many particulars Without departing from the spirit of-my invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a water-motor, the combination with a shaft of a hollow cylinder fitted on said shaft, said cylinder being open from end to end and blades formed integral with said cylinder and located on opposite sides of said shaft and inclined to the longitudinal direction thereof, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witn'esses.
CHARLES W. VLIET.
