Be it known that I, WILLIAM J. RINE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Silver Hill, in the county of Wetzell, State of West Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Churns; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. y
. This invention relates to improvements in churns, and more particularly to devices of that class in which the dasher rod is given a reciprocatory movement through the medium of a walking beam. It has been found heretofore that the path of movement described by the dasher rod is, however, not a straight line but an ellipse, owing to the pivotal mounting of the walking beam upon its standard, and, in consequence, there results what may be called an'uneven mixing or churning of the milk etc. in the churn body. To rem'edy this defect, the present invention has been designed to provide a walking beam which has an endwise horizontal movement in a practically straight f line, while the dasher rod, which isconnected to the outer end of the walking beam by a pair of straps acting in the nature of toggles, will in like manner move upward. and downward in a straight line.
The inventionfurther consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts, all as hereinafter fully described, specifically claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which like parts are designated by corresponding reference numerals in the several views.
Of the said drawings z-Figure 1 is a front elevation of the present invention. Fig. 2 is a top plan view.
Referring more particularly to the draw ings 5 designates a base or foundation plate of any description, upon which are mounted a pair of vertical standards 6 'and 7 arranged in spaced relation to each. Standard. 6 is provided toward its lower end with a shaft 8 journaled therein and projecting on opposite sides thereof, said shaft carrying on opposite ends a power wheel 9 and a sprocket wheel 10, the sprocket wheel carrying an actuating handle 11. Mountedtoward the upper end of said standard is a stub shaft 12 arranged directly above shaft 8 and carrying a sprocket wheel 13 connected by a chain 14 with the-sprocket wheel 10, the diameter of the upper sprocket wheel being somewhat greater than that of the lower, as shown.
Sprocket 13 is provided with a crank pin 15 to which one end ofa crank 16 is pivoted, the opposite end of said crank carrying a pin 17 providedwith a roller 18 moving in a horizontally disposed longitudinal slot 19 formed in the adjacent end of the walking beam 20 which travels through a horizontal guide slot 21 formed in the standard 7 in line with the stub shaft 12, the Width of said slot 21 being slightly greater than that of the walking beam, to allow the latter to pass easily therethrough. The opposite end of the walking beam has a longitudinal guide slot 22 formed vertically therethrough, the upper end of the dasher 23 of the churn 27 passing through said slot during its movement. The dasher is provided at diametrically opposite points with pins 24 extending laterally therefrom, each pin being pivotally connected with the inner end of a strap 25 Whose outer end is pivotally secured to a pin 26 disposed upon the corresponding side face of the walking beam. 1
Upon the application of power to the device either through the crank `handle 11 on the lower sprocket or through the wheel 9, which is driven by a belt (not shown), the rotation of the upper sprocket wheel 13 will cause the crank attached thereto to move the walking beam 20 backward or forward in a straight line through the guide slot 21 formed in the standards 7, the straps 25 carried by the front end of the walking beam raising the churn dasher as the beam moves forward and lowering it as the beam retreats,
' the dasher being raised and lowered once for each complete rotation of the upper sprocket wheel. It will be thus understood that fthe walking beam and dasher have a simultaneous reciprocatory movement in a perfectly straight line.
It will be'obvious that any type of dasher head may be used in connection with the dasher, and that instead of driving the walking beam from asprocket wheel, a pair of intermeshing gears may be used,
What is claimed is :M
1. The combination, with a churn, of a walking beam, a dasher rod connected with the walking beam, and means for simul- IOO IIO
taneously imparting a reciprocatory movement in a straight line, to said dasher and said Walking beam.
2. The combination, With a churn, of a standard, means rotatably mounted upon said standard7 a Walking beam connected at one end With said means; a dasher connected With the opposite end of said Walking beam, and means for rotating said first mentioned means, to impart a simultaneous reciprocatory movement in a straight line to said dasher and said Walking beam.
3. The combination with a churn and a pair of spaced vertical standards, one of which is provided With a horizontal guide slot formed therethroughI of a Wheel rotatably mounted upon the other standard at its upper end; a Walking beam having an endwise movement in a straight line7 through said guide slot, said beam being provided at one end With a horizontal guide slot and at the other end with a vertical guide slot formed therethrough; a crank pivotally secured to said Wheel; aroller carried by the opposite end of said crank and slidably engaged in the horizontal guide slot in said beam; a dasher eX- tending through the vertical guide slot in said beam,` and provided With a pair of pins disposed at diametrically opposite points thereon; a, strap pivotally secured at one end to each side face of said beam and pivotally connected at its opposite end to the corresponding dasher pin; and means for rotating said Wheel, to impart a simultaneous reciprocatory movement in a straight line to said beam and dasher.
4. The combination With a churn, of a dasher provided at diametrically opposite points with a pair of pins; a Walking beam provided at one end With a vertical guide slot7 a strap Secured at one end to each side face of said beam adjacent the slot end thereof1 and pivotally connected at its opposite end to the corresponding dasher pin; and means for reciprocating said beam to impart a simultaneous reciprocatory movement in a straight line to said dasher.
