IMPROVEMENT IN TOILET-PINS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 160,528, dated March 9, 1875; application filed November 16, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANSEL N. KELLOGG, of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented an Improved Toilet- Pin, of which the following is a specification:
My invention relates to an improvement in toilet-pins,-the object being to so construct the pin that it cannot be accidentally withdrawn, and will not be likely to scratch or injure the person using it.
The nature of my improvement will more fully appear from the following specification and the accompanying drawing, in which said drawing- Figure 1 represents a side view of my improved toilet-pin; and Fig. 2, a plan view of the same, the drawing being upon a considerably-enlarged scale.
In the said drawing, a represents the shaft of the pin; 12, the point thereof, and c the head, which I prefer to make in the form of a ring, as that form offers a better grasp in inserting and removing the pin. Upon the shaft a, and near the point b, I make in the pin a peculiar curve, d, which is so constructed, as will be seen, that the pin, when inserted into any fabric, may be thrust past said curve by turning it, but which curve will offer resistance against withdrawing except by turning it in the opposite direction from that by which it was inserted. This curve, of course, to accomplish this object, must be in its nature helical or spiral, but it need not be a true helix or spiral neither need these forms or approximate forms be concentric with the shaft a. Indeed, I prefer that said curve should be entirel upon one side of said shaft, as shown at Fig. 1, for the reason that then the point of the pin will lie down close to the fabric which it fastens, and will not be likely to scratch the person using it.
It will be seen that the ring 0 is so constructed with reference to the curve that when in the fabric the ring will lie flat. This will be readily understood by reference to the drawing.
The ring 0 performs a triple function in that it serves as a head to prevent the withdrawal of the pin in that direction; also, as a handle or leverage whereby the cork-screw movement in inserting the pin may be readily given, and also, by lying flat against the fabric, prevents the turning of the pin, which must take place before it could be accidentally loosened.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The toilet pin provided with a curve of a helical nature in the shaft near the point thereof, in combination with a ring, 0, at the head, substantially as specified.
2. The toilet-pin a, provided near the point with a curve, 61, which stands upon one side of the shaft, and the ring 0 at the head, so constructed that it shall lie flat, while the curve stands upward or outward, substantially as specified.
