JOHN CHRISTIE, OF NEW ORLEANS, LOUISIANA;
IMPROVEMENT IN COMBINED FASTENERS FOR MEETING-RAILS 0F SASHES AND BLINDS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 160,509, dated March 9, 1875; application filed January 11, 1875.
CASE A.
To all whom "it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN CHRISTIE, of New Orleans, State of Louisiana, have invented a Combined Sash and Blind Fastening, of which the following is a specification:
The objects of this invention are greater security of windows and blinds, and to prevent rattling, and, to a great extent, the ca trance of cold and dust.
My invention consists in the novel manner in which the blinds and sash are secured at one and the same time-that is, by means of the blind-catch, with the right-angled shaft running up a hole bored perpendicularly through the meeting-rail of the sash, intersecting with the sash-fastening, and secured on top by a thread cut on the end of the shaft, and a suitable nut. That part of the blind-catch shaft which intersects With the arm of the sash-fastening should be made square, of good hard metal, as well as a square cut in the end of the sash-fastening arm, so that when secured inside it cannot Work around without working both the blind and sash fastening simultaneously.
My invention further consists in a peculiar manner of locking the Whole by means of the hook and pawl or clutch, hinged together and engaging with the notched or ribbed arm, in combination with the blind-catch, the hook also engaging with a small plate screwed on top of the meeting-rail of the inner sash, and having a recess underneath, which receives the hook. By means of the pawl or clutch engaging with the notches or ribs on the arm, the meeting-rails of the sash may be drawn tightly together, keeping out cold air and dust to a great extent. By this combined device the necessity for a cross-bolt on the blinds is done away with, as the blindcatch answers the same purpose more effectually, and can be opened only from the inside of the sash. If the blind-fastening part of the combination is not needed it may be left off, and a large round headed screw inserted through the sash-fastening in the meeting-rail.
The one figure ot' the drawing is a sectional view of my-combined sash and blind fastenmg.
I claim as my invention- 1. The blind-catch A, the right-angled shaft B, having squared end O, thread-screw D, and nut E, in combination with the sash-fastening F, all substantially as and for the purpose hereinbefore set forth.
2. The combination of the square cut G in the sash-fastening F, the pawl or clutch J, and the notches or ribs H, substantially as and for the purpose hereinbefore set forth.
3. The combination of the hook I and pawl or clutch J, hinged together, with the arm of sash-fastening F, substantially as and for the purpose hereinbefore set forth.
JOHN CHRISTIE. Witnesses:
