Application filed March 20. 1922. Serial No. 545,022.
The invention relates to self-closing readapted to engage th-e inner sides of the ceptacles and has for its object the provision body 1 when the doors lare in normally of a receptacle having1 an inwardly open closed position. To close the gaps formed inn' door which in its normal position, closes between .the inwardly extending flanges 13 60 5 the receptacle and at the saine time extends and 1a thereby making the receptacle more beyond the upper edge of the receptacle thoroughly nreproof and weatherproof, I body, whereby the receptacle is made both have provided the sealing` strips 16 .secured fireproof and weatherproof. `With this and to the inwardly extending,` flanges' 13 and other objects in view, the invention resides adapted to be slidably engaged by the side 65 in the novel features of construction as more edges of the inwardly extending kdanses 141-.
fully hereinafter set forth. ln the modified construction shown in In the drawings: Figure et, the doors 17 are moved into their Figure 1 is a side elevation of a receptacle normally closed positions by means of the embodying,` my invention; separate weights 18 rigidly secured to the 7o F i ojure 2 is a side elevation at right angles doors by the inwardly extending arms 19.
to Figure 1 and partly in section;l The inwardly extending' flanges 20 at the Figure 3 is a top plan view thereof; lower ends of the frame members 21 of the Figure 4 is a side elevation partly in sectop and also the inwardly extending flanges tion of a modified construction of recep- 22 at the lower ends of the doors 17 are 75 fade, curved to be concentric with each other The receptacle has the body 1 having' the about the respective pivots 23 of the doors, open upper end and the top 2 hinged to one the arrangement beintg` such that the inside of the body at 8. The top comprises wardly extending flanges of the doors slidthe upwardly converging side members 4, ably fit the inwardly Yextending flanges of 25 the inwardly swinging doors 5 closing' openthe side members of the top. The doors ings in opposite side members, and the cap also have the dependingF flanges 24 upon the 6 havinp; dependinga flanges 7 to which the inwardly extending` flanges 22 and adapted upper ends of the side members are fixedly to engage the inner sides of the receptacle secured and the upper ends of the doors Lare body when the doors are in normally closed 35 pivotally secured as at 8. The cap has position.
flat upper face 9 to which may be secured a- From the above description. it will be street sign or the like. The doors 5 underlie readily seen that lf have provided a recepthe edsre portions of the Side members and tacle having' an inwardly swinging door normallyclose the openings therein. which is normally in closed position, the 9o To hold the doors in normally closed positop of the receptacle including` the side tion, they are pivotally connected near their members and 'the door extending laterally lower ends to the like links 10 and 11, the beyond the upper edee of the receptacle adjacent inner ends of which are pivotally bodv to weatherproof the saine.
connected to the counter weight 1Q which is lWhat I claim as my invention is: 95 40 suliiciently heavy to close either door ory 1. ln a receptacle. the combination with both doors at the same time. a receptacle bodv, of a top comprising side For the purpose of making' the receptacle members extending near their lower ends weatherproof, the side members e aswell laterally beyond said receptacle body, one as the doors 5 of the top extend near their of said side members having; an opening 100 lower ends laterally beyond the upper edge therein and an inwardly swinging,` door norof the receptacle body 1, the side members mally closing' said opening); and extending; terminatine` at their lower ends in inwardly near its lower end laterally beyond said extendingautres which extend over the receptacle body and terminating in a de upper edge of the body. The doors have at pending' flange adapted to extend into said 10a' their lower ends the inwardly extending receptacle body when said door is in its flanges 14 spaced suiiiciently above the innormally closed position, wardly extendingl flanges 13 of the side 2. ln a reoeptaclesthe combination with members to clear the latter upon inward receptacle body, of a top comprising side l swinging` of the doors. These inwardly exmembers extending near their lower ends 11o tending1 flanges 14 upon the doors terminate laterally vbeyond said receptacle body and in depending' flanges 15, which latter are terminating in flanges extending inwardly over the upper edge of said body, one of said side members having an opening therein, and an inwardly swinging door normally closing said opening and extending near its lower end laterally beyond said receptacle body and having an inwardly extending iiange spaced above the inwardly extending fianges of said side members, and means for closing the spaces between said inwardly extending flanges upon said door and side members. Y
3. In a receptacle, the combination with a receptacle body, of side members extending near their lower ends laterally beyond said receptacle body and terminating in flanges extending inwardly over the upper edge of said body, one of said side members having an opening therein, and an inwardly swinging door normally closing said opening and extending near its lower end laterally beyond said receptacle body and having an inwardly extending flange terminating in a downwardly extending flange adapted to engage the inner side of said receptacle body when said door is in its normally closed position, said inwardly extending lange being spaced above said firstmentioned inwardly extending lianges, and
means for closing the spaces between said flanges.
In testimony whereof I aliix my signature.
GEORGE W. LANGFORD.
