WITNESSES ATTORNEYS Patented Oct. 26, 1926.
JOHN;ARNELLE .FINLEY, OF ITALLAHAESEE, FLORIDA.
m n ra esa Application filed October 17, 19 25. SerialNo" 63,087.
My present invention relates generally to cigarette cases, and my primary ob]ectis the provision of a small economical and convenient case adapted to receive a package of cigarettes and-to permit of -the easy, convenient removal of one'endportion of' thje paper cover of the cigarettes after the package has been disposedlin the case, the case being so formed as to normally cover the era posed'ends of the cigarette after removal, one. end of. the case being-also constructed in such manner as to permit of'ready and easy removal of the cigarette package from the case when the cigarettes have been ex hausted.
In the accompanying drawing which illust-rates my present invention and forms a part of this specification:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the cigarette case as proposed by my invention showing the same closed,
Figure 2 is a vertical longitudinal section taken therethrough;
Figure 3 is a vertical transverse section, and,
Figure 4 is a detailed perspective view of the blank from which the body of the case is constructed according to a modified form.
Referring now to these figures my invention proposes a cigarette case whose body 10 is of upwardly opening rectangular form, and is of a depth slightly less than the length of a cigarette package, so that when a cigarette package is forced downwardly into the case, a portion of the package projects above the upper open end of the body of the case.
Obviously the body of the case may be formed from seamless tubing, as contemplated in the showing in Figs. 1 to 3 inclusive, although as shown in Fig. 4, I may utilize for this purpose a blank 11 having one edge recessed at 12 and having its opposite edge recessed as at 15.
In either event the body of the case has an opening 13 in its base 14 and is provided around its upper open end with a waving shearing edge as indicated particularly at 16, which is preferably inturned as particularly seen in Figs. 2 and 3 in order to snugly grip the sides and ends of the cigarette package when the latter is forced downwardly into the upper open end of the case so as to rest with its lower end against the base 14.
above the interned shearing, edge 16-. and the latter constitutes eflectivev convenient .means in the nature of a guide, along which a, port onio't'the paper covering of the cigarette package projecting above the edge may be torn away so as to'leave the upper ends of.
the cigarettes exposed.
It is obvious that when the cigarette pack age is placed within the body 10 of the case so as to rest upon the base 14, the insertion of the finger through the opening 13 in the base will enable the package to be readily forced upwardly out of the case body for instance when the cigarettes have been eX- hausted.
As further shown in the modification, Fig. at, the ends of the blank are joined as by means of projecting tongues 17 at one end of the blank and conformably positioned slots 18 at the opposite end thereof into and through which the tongues 17 may be pressed and crimped to form an effective look.
In the formation of the body 10 of the case it is also preferably provided with a surrounding rib 19 below its upper sharpened edge, and that portion of the case above this rib is normally covered by a cap or cover which I have shown in the nature of separable closure members 20', each hinged at one edge to one side of the case as by means of hinge members embodied in the rib 19 and preferabl including springs 21 whose function is to urge the separable closure members to the closed position as shown in Fig. l, at all times. These members are also preferably provided with a clasp functioning to latch the same in closed position, and which may be the usual purse latch as indicated at 22.
In use it is simply necessary to spread apart and open the separable closures 20 and then force a package of cigarettes downwardly into the case body 10 until arrested by the base 14:, leaving a portion of the cigarette package in projecting relation above the upper edge of the case body. The upper exposed portion of the cover of the cigarette package is then torn away along the upper edge of the case body as a guide leaving the cigarettes exposed for with drawal in the usual manner. After the cigarettes have been exhausted it is simply necessary to push the remaining portion of the package upwardly through the open end 01' the case body by the insertion of the finger upwardly through the opening 13 and against the package and it is obvious from this that my invention provides a convenient cigarette case as well as one which is efficient and eii'ective and Will be economical in cost and durable in use.
I claim A cigarette case including a generally rectangular body shaped to receive a package of cigarettes and ot a depth permitting a package of cigarettes to partly protrude from the upper open end oi the body when disposed therein, said body having an opening in its base, and an inwardly projecting flange around the opening, whereby to permit of the introduction of a finger to facilitate discharge of a cigarette package from the body after all of the cigarettes have been With- ClltLWll and said body having an outstanding rib tlicrearound below its upper edge, and a pair of separable similar ciosure members adapted in the closed position to surround the upper open end of the body and the upper end of a cigarette package disposed Within the body, and to engage said rib, means including hinge members housed in said rib for hinging said members to the sides of the body below its upper edge, the said upper edge of the body above the hinged connections of the closure members being provided with side recesses and being slightly inturned and sharpened to provide guides for the tearing of the wrapping of a cigarette package partly from the cigarettes.
