`Application inea 'November 17, 1925. serial 110.169,564.
This' invention relates to apparatus kfor flushing purposes wherein a reseivoir is to to be discharged by means of a siphon, and my improvement is directed particularly to novelineans, under the control of an. actuating device,l for permitting the Siphon to function. Y
Heretoforeyso far as I am aware, flushing by siphonage has been entirelyk automatic, causing the reservoir di'schargeto be intermittent with each refilling operation, and while desirable yfor use in public toilets and the like, this automatic intermittency of discharge is not required in dwellings or the like, where control is necessaryto provide the flushing discharge asoccasion demands. Therefore. my invention consists broadly in adapting discharge by siphonvto houseor orthe like, said traps vwill be automatically refilled.
.Other features and advantages of my invention will hereinafter appear.
The drawingshows in vertical section a tank or reservoir fitted 1withv my improved kapparatus for dischargingits contents: by
siphonage, also showing the control means therefor and means .for automatically re- In .said drawing letfl indicate a tank or reservoir such forexample as is used in containing water used for fiushing toiletszand the like, 2j a-di'scharge outlet inthe' base yof saidtank, `and 3 an'inlet pipe for refilling purposes. f, 1" f As refilling means I show `herein a pendent nozzles forming the ,terminal of a valve structure 5, in connection with pipe 3 by a pipe 6, and under control of'a--float member `7, adapted to 'open the valve and permitfingress of water to thetank when thewater leveltherein islowered. .f f
lThe particular valve mechani'smthus genlerted by the tankV contents.
erally referred to, and illustrated needs kno further comment herein, since it forms the Subject matter of another application for patent filed by `me concurrently herewith.
. Besides, my improved siphonage discharge system is not limited to use in conjunction with `the said particular valve mechanism but may be employed iii tanks fitted with other forms of inlet` control. f
Secured within the outlet 2 `isa hollow 'fitting '8 which, among other functions,
serves'as a support for avertically disposed pipe 9,` to which it is attached, said pipe being` disposed within said fitting,in concentric, `spaced relation to aV delivery pipe 10,'tlirough 'which water is to be conveyed,
`for flushingpurposes, as` to a closet bowl, not shown. i
`The pipe 9 is part of a hollow coil that inchicles the bend 11, vertical portion 12, bend y13, vertical portion V141, bend 15 and vertical portion 16, the latter terminating in `an* open end 17 opposed to and suitably spaced from the tank base. As shown the `verticalportions 12,14: and 416 constitute straight lengths arranged in parallelism.
The coil thus represented, all parts whereof excepting the lower portion of pipe 9-are located'below the normal water level in the tank, here indicated at 18, is intended to provide a Siphon for discharging the tank contents down to the low level at the pipe end 17, leaving behiii'da water seal in the coil portions-12, lathat provides an air pocket in the bend l15 and prevents flow through 'the coil of water rising in portion 16J as the tank refills. Consequently, `when the tank has been completely refilled up to its normaly level, .such for example ais that indicated at 18, only the` water of the water'seal entrapped in coil. portions 12, 13 and 14 will remain in the c'oil, with the exception of the water that rises in coil portion 16 to a point fat which'air entrapped in bend 15 iscompressed under the hydrostatic pressure ex- It therefore becomes necessary to relieve the ,air pressure in 'bend 15 in order to permit a isiphoning action to be established through the coil, and this object isV accomplished by me in thefollowing manner.
- Located within .the tank, and, as here shown, supported by fitting 8, is a tubular casing k19, which is provided with closure means 2O at its lower end, and whose 'upper open end 21 extends above the water level 18. An aperture- 22' throughY thewall of the casing-near its lower end, permits water troni the tank to rise equally withinsaid casing. A tube ot inverted U-.shape issupported within casing 19," one leg 23 oi said tube projecting through the closure 20 and:
opening into the hollow space 24 within fitting 8, while the other-legv 25 is shorter, its open end beingspaced from closure 20, anddying in aboutf theahorizontal plane of the `mouth .17 lof pipe 16, lor `preferably slightly above said plane.
Tlieflegs Q3, `25vareconnected =at"their lupper f endsk by a bend 26 that i extends above the water level 18, sothat under inactive Conditions, with the' tank liilled, leg 25 only `contains `a columnuof avateigwhile leg 23 is empty. Itis mylpurpose, however,-to pro- 'videmeans for creating a Siphon through thisinverted` U-tube, to thereby ldischarge casing 119, faster than 4it `can reiilll, `through `aperture 22, Cto-rfa reason which will presently appear.
tlifediscliarge oi' casing 19, andthereby they major 4vsiphon of the coil is started for discharge oi thetank through ypipe v9 and into thedelivery pipe 10. Y As convenientmeans for raising the level ot' water in casing 1,91 have shown a cup in theformot a sleeve 28 concentric with said `casing and slidable thereon, the base 29 of said-cup normally restingfoi' lsupport upon a. shoulder 30 extended from said casing.
' Holesy 31"through the wall of the cup permit ingress otlwater fromthe tank, so that Said cup isnormally filled. Now, it is apparent that if the cup beelevated to a point where a lportion 'thereof exceeds vthe height of casing l19, the` cup Vcontents'will thereby raise the level oi `water above bend 26,*thus `accomplishing the object already-premised of' starting the Siphon through they inverted 4Lhtube Variousmeans lmay be resorted to ltor elevating cupQS, and for'lexamplew have shown a yoke 32,`pivotallyconnected to the cupgsides and continuing into a telescopic lever arm 33, which is provided with La fusual forinnofpivotal 'handle 34,fo'r convenient manuall operation.
It aoftenihap'pens when kflushing a closet lbowl thati-tlie trap containinga water seal intended to prevent the Yescape of sewer `gases `is leit (dry, vand similarly thewater eealisin that partioi 'my improved Siphon Theretore l provide means -avhereby rthe level otwaterin casing 19 may coil included in portions 12, 13 and 14 is exposed to tliesame contingency. Therefore l providea pipe 35 which extends from the .tank filling nozzle 4 to the top of bend 11,
for the supply under service pressure, of a small column of water, whose flow will be portion 12 to -illit andpipe'fportion 14, thus recreating the water seal in the coil.v
v In the operation of my` improved flushing system it willbeappreciated that upon the emptying 4oli-casing l19 through the invertedU-tube, which has had the eiiect of relieving air pressure in bend 15 by `means of tube 27, fthe siphon in said inverted U- tube thereby'becomesbroken, andthen casing 19 can refill through aperture 22.'
Variations within the spiritv and scope of my inventiomare equally comprehended vby the foregoing disclosure.
I claim: Y
y 1.v A liquid discharge system includinga tank and-comprising "a main siphon which includes a water sealed air` pocket constituting a breakin lthe Siphon, relief means for IVsaid air pocket," auxiliary siphonagey means 'for controlling said relief means, and manually actuable means, operable only lwhen the tankis approximately filled, for adding, a quota of-liquid-to said auxiliary siphonage means, to establisha siphontherein.
2; 'A liquid lvdischarge system including a tank provided with "filling means and an outlet, a coil within said' tankfto discharge said tank by'siphonage, said coil arranged to provide a water sealed air pocket constituting a'break in the siphon, relief means for saidV airpocket, auxiliary siphonage means for controlling said relief means, .thereby permitting the siphon to function, and manually actuable means operablewhen thetank is approximately filled for adding a quota of liquid to said auxiliarysiphonage means, to establish a Siphon therein.A f
