This invention relates to a strainer head tor tubing machines, with an object in View of providing a device of this character that will adapt the machine for satisfactory and expeditious operation upon materials of varying characteristics without producing an undue strain upon any of the parts or irregularity in operation. a

Machines of this character are designed to operate upon rubber compounds, including various substances, during the process of recluin'iing the rubber, and these materials vary greatly in consistency. Consequently, it has been found that strainer heads heretofore in use have not been fully adequate to handling these diflferent materials with satisfactory results in all respects. My invention is designed to overcome this disadvantage.

The strainer head is adapted for use in connection with a tubing machine of standard or appropriate form and is, as will be understoodby operatives in this industry, intended to be secured to the cylinder. of

which constitutes a supporting member and is of such size as to conform substantially to the end of the cylinder 1. The said plate has four holes fitted to receive stud bolts 5:
that project from'the cylinder and receive nuts 6 for securing the plate to the cylinder. The plate t is of open construction and its .inner diameter corresponds with the outer diameter of the liner 2. A suitable washer 7 may be interposed between the plates and the cylinder 1.
The strainer head also includes a tubular element that has an inner member 8, which is threaded into the bore liner 2, as clearly shown at 9, and engages with a sliding fit the interior of the face plate 4. The inside of the member 8 is directly in line with and ot the same diameter as theinteriorot the liner 2, so that the said member, in eitect, constitutes a prolongation of the bore of the cylinder in which the screw 3 can operate. The plate 4 has a circular rib 23 formed thereon surrounding the inner member 8, which rib constitutes a shoulder against which the inner ends of the halves 11, 12 rest when closed together, thereby insuring rigidity and also assisting in perfect alignment of the parts. The halves 11, 12 are also provided with a multiplicity of circular holes 24, 25, and it will be noted that the diameter of these holes is'considerably less than the diameter of the holeslO in the inner member 8, and that the holes in the said outer and inner members are not coincident, that is, are not in line. 7
The end rnember 26 is fitted to seat. within the-front portionof the outer member com posed of the halves 11, 12, and to be secured therein by theinut 21, which clamps the said end member between itself and the inner member 8. This end member also has a multiplicity of circular holes 27 passing therethrough; It will beobserved from the foregoing description that the holes in the inner and outer tubular members he at right her 8 and the outer member constituted by the halvesll, 12, and lieadjacent the interior of the latter when they are in closed position. A flat screen 30 is placed between the end member 26 and the. inner member 8 and clamped in position through the action of the nut 21. The rear ends of'thehalves 11, 12 are bevelled ,ofi as shown at 31, 32,
so as to clear the member 8,when the halves medium to the head. By arranging. the
strainer head is very great, it will be apparent that there is a severe strain upon the halves 11, 12 .of the'outer member and a tendency to cause them-to bulge and separate intermediate to their ends.
In order to meet this tendency and prevent any injury from occurringl provide a pair of lock bars 36, 37 whi ch are provided with hinged knuclrles'38, 39 that engage pintles 40, 41 which are mounted iii-lugs 42, 43 that are formed integrally with the face plate 4. As a resultof this arrangement the said lock bars can swing vertically or in a plane at right angles to the plane of swinging movement of the halves 11, 12, so as tosbe brought into or out of cooperative or locking en gagementwith the said halves when the latter are in closed or operative position. The lock bars 36, 37 have their inner faces pro vided with longitudinal grooves'or channels 44,45 which leave a pair of ribs 46, 47 at each side of the said channels. The adjacent parts of the halves 11, 12 are provided with two pairs of grooves 48, 49 fitted to receive the said ribs 46, 4"; and it will be seen that the fashioning of these grooves 48, 49 produces corresponding pairs of ribs 50, 51 which are adapted to enter the channels 45 in the lock bars 36, 37. This constrution enables each of the said lock bars to interlock with thehalves 11, 12 throughout the length of the latter so as to firmly hold them in operative alignment and prevent any distortion of the same during the operation of the machine. It will be noted that thegrooves 48,49 are larger in cross section than the ribs 46, 47 so that there may be ready interengagement of the parts, the outersides of the said grooves and ribs being slightly rounded so as to facilitate this. However, the operative engaging faces of the said ribsand grooves are straight and parallel so as to cause the locking to be rigid withfthe parts in perfect alignment. This construction is well shown in Fig. 6.
For the purpose of firmly clamping and securing the lock bars in engagement with the'halves of the outer member of the strainer head, the nut 21 has a circular groove 52 which is beveled on'its outer edge, and this be'vel'isdesigned to cooperate with corre-' sponding bevels formed on the exterior of the extremities ofthe lockbars 36, 37. The arrangement is such that, as the nut 21 is screwed on the unitedxhalves 11, '12, the groove52 passes over the extremities ofthe as clearly'shown in Fig. 5. Thus theact-ion of the nut 21 is to hold the end member 26, halves 11, 12 and lock bars 36, 37 all inoperative position; while the said halves prevent any lateral movement of the end memher, and the said lock bars prevent any lateral distortion of the said halves.
.The apparatus may be employed in the usual way, with the halves 11, 12 of the outer tubular member held in closed position,
as shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 4. As already described, there is a space between the inner tubular member Sand the outer member composed of the halves 11, 12, while the screen 28 is spaced from the said inner member and in contact with the interior of the said outer member. As a result of this construction, the material being operated upon The operation is also facilitated by making the holes 10 in the inner member greater in cross section than the holes 24, 25 in the outer member, since this enables the mate rial whichhas not yet been strained, to pass more freely through the inner member,while the passage of the material through the screen28 is slightly retarded by the smaller holes 24. 25, thereby protecting the screen from violent action. The fact that the holes in the inner and outer membersare not in line, requires the material to follow an indirect course, which increases the effectiveness of the apparatus under certain circumstances: and by perforating the entire side and end walls of the strainer head, the outlet for material is greatly increased. thus increasing the capacity of the machine. Finally the provision of the lock bars for the halves of the outer member, and for cooperation with the lock nut 21, supplies abundant protection for the halves of the outer member against bulging or injury throughout their length, which bulging might re suit from the forceful movement of the material bemg operated upon if the said parts were not thus reinforced. i
By providing the inner member 8 with a portion which bears against the/inner circumference of the plate 4 and also bears against the end of the bore liner 2 as well as being threaded into the latter, the assembly of the said inner member with the machine is made very firm and rigid, so that thesaid member will maintain perfect alignment and will be enabled to resist the great strain imparted to it.
j Should the strainer head become clogged, as frequently happens, or should it, for any it is a very simple matter to remove the nut 21 and swing the lock bars 36, 37 and halves 11, 12 apart, thus exposing the interior of the said halves and the exterior of the screen 28 for cleaning. With the nut 21 removed, the end member 26 may also be readily taken out and the screens 28 and 30 detached for cleansing or repair. The parts may be replaced and returned to operative position in a manner obvious from the scription,
It will be understood'that various changes may be resorted: to in the form, construction and arrangement of the several parts without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention; and hence I do not intend to described, except as they may be included in the claims.

26. In combination with the cylinder of a tubing machine, a strainer head, a plate for securing the strainer head to said cylinder, said strainer head having a perforate ele ment fitted to be threaded into said cylinder and have a sliding fit with the interior of said plate.
27. In combination with the cylinder of a tubingmachine, having a bore liner, a strainer head, a plate for securing the strainer head to said cylinder, a perforate element fitted to be threaded into said liner and have a sliding fit with the interior of said cylinder and plate.
28. In combination with the cylinder of a tubing machine, having a bore liner, a strainer head, a plate for securing the strainer VERNON RGYLE.
