Description

A. M. MIL L E R.
Bag-Fastener.
' Patented March2,1875.
THE GRAPHIC C0.PHOT0.-LITH.39&4I PA RK PLAOE, N.Y.
UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIoE.
ASHER M. MILLER, OF STURGIS, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF HIS RIGHT TO JOHN B. JACOBS, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN BAG-FASTENERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 160,453, dated March 2, 1875; application filed October 21, 1874.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ASHER M. MILLER, of Sturgis, in the county of St. Joseph and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Bag-Fastener, of which the following is a specification This invention consists in a curved and I slotted metal plate, to be used in combination with an endless cord rove through eyelets in a bag, for fastening said cord when wrapped around the neck of the bag.
Figure l is a perspective view of the fastener on a bag that is tied. Fig. 2 is a similar view, showing the mouth of the bag open.
In the drawing, A represents a sheetmetal plate curved to form a segment of a circle, but with its extremities curvedin reverse direction, or turned outwardly. In one end there is a slot, at, and near the center two holes are made, through which the ends of a cord, B, are rove, which cordsare rove alternately in and out through holes or eyelets formed in the neck of the bag 0, the ends of said cord being tied together on the outside of the bag opposite the plate A.
The manner of operating my bag and fastener is as follows: The fastener is held in one hand, and the string being pulled by the other, the mouth of the bag will be closed in folds compactly. The string is then wound several times around the mouth, and passed around the fastener, the pressure of the thumb on either of the reversely-curved edges throwing the other edge outwardly, so that the string can be readily passed under it. When the thumb is removed the fastener jams the string, so that it cannot slip. When it is desired to remove the string, by pressing the thumb on either of the outwardly turned edges, the opposite edge will be raised, and the string can be readily freed.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The metal plate curved to form a segment of a circle, with its ends curved in reverse direction, or turned outwardly, as described, and
provided with the slot a, in connection with the cord B, as and for the purpose specified.
