WEATHERPROOF RAIL STAND FOR TRACK SCALES.
Application filed .Tune 25,
This invention relates to a novel weatherproof rail stand structure for track scales possessing special utility as an adjunct to weather covers for track scales of the characterand type disclosed in my former Patents Nos. 1,335,599 granted March 30, 1920, and 1,426,003 granted August 15, 1922.
Primarily, the invention has in view to improve the practical efficiency of a weather cover for track scalesby providing an umbrella-type rail stand associated with the deck structure of the scale pit and with the rail in sucha manner as tothoroughly protect. the interior ,of the scale from the weather elements while at the same time forming an excellent vent for the scale pit so that each rail stand is in effect a ventilator and the provision of the usual scale pit vent pipes is entirely unnecessary. Also the invention contemplates an umbrellatype ,rail stand preferably associated with the selflraining deck thereby dispensing with longitudinal slots along the deck or cover of the scale pit by introducing individual weather protection at each stand. Suchan arrangement materiallyreduces the exposed area of the deck to be weather protected.
Furthermore it is the purpose or object of ,the present invention to provide a weatherproof rail stand for track scales which is of a simple and economical construction, one which can be easily assembled as well as easily and readily removed, while at the same time so designed as to facilitate the placing and loosening of the rail fastenings and not interfering in the least with the function of the latter.
WVith these and other objects in view which will more readily appear to those more familiar with the art as the nature of i the invention is further understood, the same consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
The invention is necessarily susceptible of structural modification without departing from the spirit or principle thereof but a preferred and practical embodiment of the same is shown in the accompanying drawings in which- F'gure ,1 is a side elevation of an umbrella- 1924. Serial No. 722,326.
type weatherproof scale stand constructed in accordance with the present invention, the view illustrating the relation of the stand to the deck or cover of the scalepit and.
also to the rail.
Figure 2 is a top plan view of the conk struction shown in Figure l.
. Figure 3 is a vertical sectional View of the new rail stand showing the operative relation of all parts thereof to the deck or cover of the scale pit and to one of the rails of the scale outfit.
Figure 4 is a detail in perspective of one of the segmental sections of the sectional detachable umbrella hood.
Like references designate corresponding parts in the several figures of the drawings.
In carrying forward the present invention no special structural changes are required in the deck structure of the scale pit, but as above stated, it is preferable to associate the device with a self-draining deck or cover for the scale pit, thus avoiding the necessary weather protection to the interior of the scale pit and obviating the use of drains or gutters of any kind. Accordingly in the drawings, the invention is shown applied to an inclined or tapered deck member designated by the numeral 1 and this deck member, as a part of the deck structure, is provided at suitable points with the rail stand openings 2 through which eX- tend the rail stands connected with the parts of the scale outfit and standing well above the deck 1 to provide for the support of the track rails above the level of the deck. At each of the rail stand locations the rail stand structure is the same and the same weatherproofing and ventilating features are maintained so for the purpose of the present invention it is deemed sufficient to illustrate and describe only one of the rail stands and its relation to the deck and to the supported rail and to refer to the applicantsformer.
