Application filed November 11, -,1929. Serial xNo. 406,232.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in a flag pole or the like joint.
The invention has for an object the provision of a device of the class mentioned which is of simple durable construction, de-
pendable in use and efficient in action, and which can'be manufactured and sold at a reasonable cost.
The invention proposes an upper pole sec- .tion telescopically engaged within a lower pole section, a cup secured within the lower pole section and formed with an outer chamfered top edge engaging an inner chamfered bottom edge on said upper pole sectionl for supporting the upper pole section and for collecting rain water and the like and for preventing any leakagev of rain water into the Vlower pole section and consequent decay to building or foundation.
For further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the followingy description and accompanyingdrawing, and to the appended claims in which the various '.novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.
In the accompanying drawing forming a material part of this disclosure Fig. 1 is a fragmentary vertical sectional .view of a fla-g pole joint constructed according to this invention.v
Fig. 2 is an enlarged detailed view of the '-outer chamfered top Vedge 13 engaging an inner chamfered bottom edge 14 on said upper pole section 10 for supporting the upper pole 'section and for collecting rain water andthe like to reevaporate and for preventing any leakage of rain water into the lower pole secfoundation. j t
rThe said cup 12 is provided with a plurality` of peripheral ridges 15 completely extending around its circumference and providing a water tight joint whenengagedwithin the lowerpole section 1l. The engagement` is accomplished Aby heatingrand vhydraulically pressing the lower pole section around the cup and then allowed to cool. In this manner the lower pole section is shrunkupon the cup and the peripheral ridges 15V are depended upon to prevent the passage ofwater between' the adjacent faces of the cup randthe lower pole section. '1
In Fig; 3 anotherembodiment of the invenfV tionV and "consequent vdecay vto buildingn or tion has been disclosed in which a meansis provided for ydraining collected water from the cup Y. 12. 'n This means is accomplished by providingvthe cup 12 and.V the lower pole section with aligned apertures 16. The passage produced'V by these apertures extends from the bottom of the'cup downwards so that the cup may be completely drained.
In Fig. 4 another'modified `form has been illustrated in which a secondmeans has been shown. forattachingthe cupwithin theI lower pole section. :The y attachment is accomf plished by rivets 1'? arranged thru the cup and thru the lowerpole section.
In themodified'form kof thede-vice illus-.
plates18 Vhingedly mounted' at their upper ends upon the lower end of the upper pole sect-ion 10 and formed with innerhchamfered lowered ends 14' engaging the youter Y The saidv Y means consists Vof a plurality of support eoV chamfered, upper edge13 ofthe cup 12, and
means for' urging lthe platesslightly out;`
wards.` Theflatter means consists of a strong coaxial spring 19 arranged on each ofthe pivot points of .the'support plates, and Ca".-
pable yof slightly urging the platesl outwards'.
The plates must be manuallyfforced together when the upper pole section is inserted with'- in the lower pole section and the spreading Ies:
action of the springs 19 cause the edges of the support plates provided with the chamfered edges to engage in the corners produced by the upper chamfered edge 13 of the cup with the adjacent face of the lower pole section. Y
In operation of the device, the lower pole sectionrmay ybe attached upon a roof or any other support.' A flag may be supported upon the top of the upper pole section. Rain water and the like running down the louter surface of the upper pole section may collect in the cup 12 and maydrain outthrua'perf i .i
ture 16. Y
While I have shown anddescribed the -preferred embodiment of my invention, it is to be understood that I do notl limit myself to the precise construction herein disclosed and the right is reserved to all changes andjmodiiications coming within the scope of the invention as defined in the vappended claims.
CHARLES G( WILKINSON.
Having thus described my invention, what Y I claim as new, and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent is :en
1. A iag'pole or the like j oint,'comprising y an upper pole section telescopically engaged within a'lower pole sect-ion, a cup secured within the lower pole section and formed with an outer chamfered top edge engaging an inner chamfered bottom-'edge on said up- Jper pole section for supporting' the upper pole section and for collecting rain water and the like lto reevaporate and for preventing leakage of rain water intothe lower pole section and consequent decay and damage to building or foundation, said'cup being provided with a plurality of peripheral ridges arranged for engaging the lower pole section and providing a water tight joint between these parts. l
2. A flag pole or the'like joint, comprising an upper pole'section telescopically engaged within a lower pole section, a cup secured within the lower pole section .and formed with an outer ch'amfered top edge `engaging Van inner chamfered bottom edge on said upper pole section for supporting the'upper `pole section and for collecting rain water and the like to reevaporate and for preventing leakage of rain waterl into the lower pole o section and consequent decay and damage to foundation or building, said cup being provided with a peripheral ridge irmlyV engaging the metal of the lower pole section byV reason of the lower pole section being shrunk thereon.
8. A flag pole or the like joint, comprising an upper pole sectiony telescopically engaged within a lower pole section, a -cupsecured within the lowerv pole section and formed with an outer chamfered top edge engaging an inner chamfered bottom edge on said upper pole section for supporting` the upper pole section and for collecting rain water and the like to reevaporate and Vfor preventing ooi
