IMPROVEMENT IN TOPS FOR SALT AND PEPPER BOXES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 160,346, dated March 2, 1875; application filed October 10, 1874.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GEORGE D. PAUL, of Brooklyn, E. D., in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and lniproved Top for Salt and Pepper Boxes, of which the following is a specification:
The invention will first be fully described, and then pointed out in the claim.

A is a'pert'orated top, which may be of any approved kind or form common to pepper or salt bottles. B O is a gridironshaped stir ring and crushing frame, arrange-d close under the top, to slide on the rod D, and with a thumb-piece, E, projecting out through one side of the cup; also with a spring, F, the thumb-piece and spring acting to push the crushing-frame along beneath the top of the cup forward and backward, to crush the lumps that may fall upon it and stir the finer particles when packed against the cap, all so that the perforations will always be kept free, and the contents Will be crushed, and thus the difficulties attending the use of these bottles or boxes for such articles, particularly salt, will be Wholly avoided.
Points G are made on the crusher, to project up when the bottle is inverted, to break up lumps and otherwise increase the efficiency of the crusher.
I am aware that in pepper-boxes having perforated tops, a revolving or sliding agitator and a spring are not new; but
\Vhat I claim is The perforated top of a pepper-box, in combination with an agitator provided with thumb-piece E and crushing points G, sliding upon a rod, D, and returned by a spring coiled around said rod, as and for the purpose specified.
