R. .GUHLLERY MACHINE FOR TESTING SHEET METAL FOR DRAWING PURPOSES Filed Nov. 28, 1924 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 Patented (Jet. 19, 1926.
ATENT OFFICE.
RENE GUILLERY, OF PARIS, FRANCE.
MACHINE FOR TESTING SHEET METAL FUR DRAWING PURPOSES.
Application filed November 28, 1924, Serial No. 752,770, and in France December 18, 1923.
The present invention has for object the testing of sheet metal for drawing purposes.
The test consists in holding the sheet metal to be tested between two circular jaws and to exert a pressure by means of a ball, at the centre of the sheet metal, and then in observing the moment at which the sheet metal is rent.
The amount the ball has advanced at this moment, that is to say, the drawn concavity which the sheet metal presents, characterizes more or less the drawing properties oi the sheet metal.
The machine forming the object of this invention realizes this test simply and easily it permits the drawn form or cup to be seen at once and it also gives the maximum load at which the metal is rent.
The indication of this maximum load fixes without any possible doubt the moment at which the test should be stopped which it prolonged unnecessarily increases the drawn cup measured.
Figure 1 represents a vertical section of the machine, Figure 2 a plan, Figure 3 the arrangement of the distribution of the pressure. this figure being a vertical section according to line A-A of Fig. 2.
1 is a cast iron frame the top of which carries a cylinder which receives the piston 2 on which a hydraulic pressure is applied. This piston is without packing, so it has no rubhing action it is terminated by a guide piece 3 which acts on the punch 4 at the end of which is fixed a ball 5 having a diameter of millimeters.
The cover 6 of the cylinder has a nut 7 which supports the bottom jaw 8 against which is pressed during the action the special ring 9 which is worked by means of the hand-lever 10. The piece 11 swings round the axis 12 hinged to let the band of sheet metal to be tested 13 pass. It carries, in the part not hinged, the claws in which the special ring 9 becomes gripped.
The nut 14 with wings 15 is screwed in the piece 11 and carries the top jaws 16, which presses against the ball thrust bearing 84L. The top jaw 16 is held pressed against the ball thrust bearing 34 by means of a packing ring 16 placed in a circumferential groove of the nut 14 and taking a bearing on a corresponding annular shoulder oi the top jaw 16. A rack 1'? fixed to the guide piece 3 gears with the piIliOIl 18 which works the graduated drum 19 having a spring to take up the play and on which the pointer indicates the movements of the piston that is to say the measurements of the drawn cups.
The very supple cup leather 2O prevents the scale, detached from the sheet metal during the test, falling into the cylinder.
The graduated disc 21 fixed on a micrometer screw the screw always being solicited by the spring 36 which it tends to unscrew, permits the thickness of the sheet metal to be read by the pointer 37.
The bottom of the frame 1 is plugged up by the circular plate 22 and tightened by stud 28 forming a tank for liquid in which is fixed the pressure pump 2%, the geared pump is worked from the outside by the crank-hadle 25. This pump 24 sucks in a tank through a pipe (not shown).
The pump delivers the liquid through the pipe 26, provided with a check valve 27, into another pipe 26 extending horizontally (Fig. and leading to a distributor 28 fixed at the bottom of the cylinder by the hollow bolt 29 the pointed screw 30 unscrewed permits the liquid to return to the tank, that is allows the piston to come down. It will be seen that the entire pipe line for the liquid under pressure is contained within the frame 1 of the machine. v
The opening 31 permits during the compression the return to the tank of the air which is found above the piston.
The pressure gauge 32 graduated in effective pressures on the piston and carries a maximum hand which permits the load to be followed as increased.
Finally a threaded plug 33 serves to put into the tank the oil for transmission.
Operation.
The operator stands in front of the machine to be able, with his right hand to turn the crank-handle 25 in the same direction as the hands of a watch.
With the left hand, he pushes the hand lever 10 to the end of its stroke to disengage the special shaped ring 9, and with the right hand he lifts the top part with the aid of one of the wings 15 of the nut 14.
He will then put in place the disc or band, to be tested and then, after having replaced the top part will pull the hand-lever 10 as far as possible to lock the special shaped ring 9.
He screws the winged nut until its is locked.
After having screwed to the bottom the pointed screw 30 and brought the maximum hand of the pressure gauge to zero, he screws back the screw 30 and turns the crank-hendle 25 and the pressure increases uniformly.
I-Ie follows this increase and, when the movement of the hand slows down, he ob serves the drawn cup in stopping the test at the moment when the crack is clearly produced.
lVithout any movement other than to screw the disc 2l to the bottom, the operator can read first, the thickness of the sheet metal, secondly on the graduated drum 19, the drawn cup, and thirdly on the pressure gauge, the maximum pressure exerted by the ball. 7
After having unscrewed the pointed screw 30 which .will allow the piston to come down, and the drum 19 return to zero, he unscrews the wing nut one turn, pushes to the end of its stroke the hand-lever 10, lifts the piece 11 and takes out the sheet metal tested, the machine is then ready for another test.
