Appneauo iedivrareh 1e, 152s. semaine. 625,594.
This invention relates to improvements in I brushesl and is particularly directed to that `classr of brushes wherein the bunch of bris'-V tles contains a wedge to expand the same into engagement with a surrounding metal ferrule or band.
. The present invention especially resides in the means for securing the bunch of bristles to the handle.
The invention is illustrated in the accomn panying drawing, wherein Fig. 1. shows the brush in side elevation.`
- spective.
Referring to the drawing the numeral 5, designates th-e bristles of the brush which are Varranged in a. bunch and are encircled by a metal ferrule 6 which latter has the shap the brush is to assume.
.Into the butt-ends of thebunch of bristles, 1
I drive two wedges 7 which latter are spaced K apart in that they are arrangedon oppo :io site sides of aV central'line passing'thro-ugh i. the bunch of bristles.
This arrangement 'provides a central filling. of bristles. 8 'between the outer sides of the wedges andthe ferrule. Y
During theformation of the bunch of bristles I preferably, but not necessarily, place a central tube'lO in the central filling 8 yof extends preferably from the upper to the lower edges of the wedges, as seen in Fig. 2m
Y of theV drawing. Y
It will be noted byv reference to Fig. 3 `of the drawing that bristles are provided all around the central tube 10so that the only cavity between the wedges is at the center of the'brush and that this central cavity is only the diameterof the tube. y
The metal ferrule or band 6 is so placed on the bunch of bristles as to project slightly above the root ends thereof and there-by form a cavityor socket on top of the bunch, :Into this cavity or socket the lower end of the handle is to be placed, as will presently be described.
The handle 11, in this instance, is Hat on two vsides and has aliange `portion 12aty its base. This flange portion is of a width* and depth to snugly tinto the'soclret over the butt-ends of the bristles, and when so placed, the handle will practically seat on the upper rasata surfaces of the two spaced-apart wedges and y over the upper end of the'central tube 10. After the handle is in placethe bristles vof the bunch are spread open at the center and a fastening 13, carrying a lateral proj ection or a head 14, is passed up through thel tube 10 and entered in the bottom of the handle -until the lateral projection orhead 14 seats against the under side of the tube and also preferably against the bottom edges of the two spaced-apart `wedges, as clearly shown in Fig. 2, and thehandle is thereby lsecured directly to the bunch'of` "bristles t.
By preference, I form the head n or the fastening in such away as to provide an upwardly-extending projection 17, whose shape will vary accordingto the shape of the head and the character of the fastening device.`
The upwardly-extending projection 17 of whatever form it may be will be embedded in the two spaced-apart wedges whereby it will serve to hold the vtwo wedges from ,bulgingv laterally at opposite sides of the central tube 10 or the'hole through which the fastening passes in case the tube is omitted. Y For purposes of finish, I usually place a leather band 15, around the outer side of the butt-ends thereof, two Vspaced apart parallel 1 disconnectedrwedges inthe butt-ends ofthe bunch, a woodenhandleabove the wedges and a fastening extending up between the two parallel wedges and into the handle said fastening having a headl which extends across the space between and engages the under sides ofthe parallel wedges said head having means to prevent the wedges from spreading apart.
2.'In a brush the combination with a butt-ends` of the bunch, a handle above the 'wedges and a fastening extending up between the two wedges and into the handle said fasteningehaving a head of a size to eX- tend across th-espace betweenmthe wedges and said head having upwardly-extending projecting ineansv thereon which latter enter the material of the wedges and hold the same from spreading apart.
V.3. In a brush the combination Vwith a bunch vof bristles, of a: band around the butt-A ends thereof, two spaced aloartk wedges in ,to extend across the espaceV` between the wedges and each arin of the head having a projection thereon to enter the wedge above it whereby the two wedges will be held from spreading apart. v
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
