Description

Oct. 19 1926. 1,603,990 L. M. SMITH BRUSH Filed Oct. 24 1925 nivEN'roR ATTORNEY Patented Oct. 19, 1926.
UNITED STATES LEMON M. SMITH, NEW YORK, N. Y.
BRUSH.
Application filed October 24, 1925. Serial No. 64,633.
This invention relates to brushes and has for its ob]ect the provlslon of a novel or 1mproved brush of the scrubbing or cleaning type so constructed and arranged that. the
edges-thereof may be used as well as the active face, it being consequently easierto clean out corners or edges of sinks, lav-atories or in fact anything else to be cleaned and kept sanitary.
An important object of the invention is to provide a brush in which the bristle tufts stand at different angles so that they will have a better action on the surface rubbed over. 7
Another object is to provide a brush having at its edge a removable portion of twisted wire carrying bristles, this removable portion or member being embracingly engaged upon the brushhead or back and being removable when worn so as to be replaced by a new one as occasion may arise.
An additional object is to provide a device of this character which will be simple and inexpensive to manufacture, easy to use,
positive in action, efficient and durable in service, anda general improvement in the art. i
l/Vith the above and other objects and advantages in view, the invention consistsin the details of construction and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described and claimed, and illustrated in; the accompanying drawing in which:
Figure 1 is an elevation of a brush embodying the invention,
Figure 2 is a cross section on the line 2-2 of Figure 1,
Figure 3 is a longitudinal section on the line 3-3 of Figure 1, and
Figure 1 is a detail view showing the removable rim or circumferential member.
Figure 5 is a rear view of the brush showing the wires interlocked.
Referring more partlcularly to the drawings I have shown the brush as comprising a head 10 of any suitable material, size and shape and provided, preferably, with a handle 11 which may be integral therewith. In the present instance the head is shown as of substantially elliptical shape and con vex in cross sectionat both its back and face. 7 The face portion is formed with a series of sockets 12 within which are mounted tufts of bristles 13. It will be observed that these tufts follow the contour of the head and that they are at different angles so that they will be properly presented to the sur face to be cleaned when the brush is rubbed thereover.
A very important feature is the provision of a frame member 14L here represented as formed of twisted wire though possibly capable of being made in some other manner. This frame member carries a plurality of bristle tufts 15 which extend 'outwardly therefrom. The edge of the brush head is grooved as indicated at 16 for the reception of this member 14; and after it is placed in position it is secured by means of hooks 17 at the ends of the member 14:, which hooks areadapted to be interengaged.
Of course the brush is used in substan tially the same manner as any other but it has the great advantage of being equipped with thebrush structure at the rim which will greatly facilitate the cleaning out of any dirt or other matter accumulated within the corners or edges of sinks or in fact anything else. Clearly, when the brush structure at the rim or outer edge of the head becomes worn the hooks may be disengaged and the frame 14 removed and replaced by a new one without it being necessary to discard the brush itself.
While I have shown and described a preferred embodiment of the invention, it should be understod that I reserve the right to make such changes in the form, construction and arrangement of parts as will not depart from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claims.
Having thus described the invention, I claim:
1. A brush comprising a head having one face provided with bristle tufts, the head being formed at its edge witha groove extending entirely therearound, and a band of twisted wire carying bristle tufts seated within said groove.
2.' it brush comprising a head having one face provided with bristle tufts, the head being formed at its edge with a groove extending entirely therearound, and a twisted tuft carrying core seated withinsaid groove, the ends of said core being formed with hooks, said hooks being interngaged.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
LEMON M. SMITH.
