IaOUD-SPEAKING DEVICE FOR SOUND-REPRODUCING MACHINES.
Application filed January This invention relates to a loud speaking device for a sound transmitting or sound reproducing machine, and while the device is capable of many applications, it partieularly is designed for use in modern well known radio receiving sets. Such receiving sets usually comprise a casing having a panel at the front thereof, the various parts of the apparatus being disposed in said casing. As
is well known, loud speakers are now commonly used with said radiosets. 'Such a loud speaker should be constructed to properly direct and transmit the sound waves produced so that the reproduced sound will be heard clearly and distinctly.
It is an object of this invention to provide a loud speaker for such a radio receiving set, which loud speaker comprises a tone modifier and is adapted to be secured to the panel of the radio receiving set.
It is a further object of the invention to provide a loud speaking device comprising a tone modifier which is secured to the front anel of the radio receiving apparatus and is disposed betweensaid panel and the sound reproducing device, said parts being supported by said panel.
It is also an object of the invention to provide a loud speaking device for a radio receiving apparatus comprising a tone modifier which is axially alined with an opening in the front panel of the radio receiving apparatus, a sound reproducing device comprising a diaphragm being secured co-axially with the tone modifier, said parts being supported by said panel,
It is still another object of the invention to provide a tone modifier comprising 00- axially arranged spacedtubes, one within the other, with a vielding spacing means therebetween, one of said tubes having a slot formed therein in alinement with the spacing means. together with means for securing said tubes together and clamping said spacin means therebetween.
Tt is still further an object of the invention to provide a tone modifier comprising spaced co-axially arranged tubes, one within t e other, the inner tube having a means secured thereto placing the same under stress, together with means securing the tubes to gether spaced from said last mentioned means.

Referring to the drawings, the device is shown comprising a base plate or member 5 having upstanding therefrom at one end. and secured thereto a plate 6. While the base 5 and plate 6 may be constructed in various ways, it is contemplated to have the base 5 form the bottom member of the casing of a radio receiving apparatus and the plate 6 to form the front panel thereof, Small blocks 6 are shown secured to the top of base 5 and about the rear side of plate 6 by means of which the parts can conveniently be secured together. The plate or panel 6 has a cylindrical opening 6 formed therein and a casing 7 is provided having a cylindrical passage therethrough of substantially the same size as and co-axially alined with the opening 6*. Preferably, a thin washer of yielding or substantially nonelastic material 8 is disposed between the end of easing 7 and panel 6. The casing 7 has fitting therein in the end remote from panel 6 a tube 9 of elastic material, such as well seasoned wood, the exterior of which has spaced portions 9 contacting casing 7 and the remaining cylindrical exterior of which is spaced from the inner wall of casing 7 throughout the greater part of its extent, said tube 9 projecting slightly through the opening 6. A smaller tube 10, likewise of elastic material, is disposed in and co-axially with the tube 9 and spaced from the walls thereof. The tube 10 is rovided adjacent its end nearest panel 6 with a slot 10 extending longitudinally thereof at its bottom, the slot having a central circular portion and end portions extending therefrom, as shown in Fig. 4. A spacing member 11 is disposed between tubes 9 and 10 and is alined with the slot 10. While various materials may be used for the spacing member 11, it is preferably made of yielding materill U washers 1S and 19.

In operation, the device will. stated. be mounted in the front panel of the radio receiving apparatus. and the-sound transmitted will be reproduced in the telephone receiver 2-2. The diaphragm in the receiver 22 will be actuated and will, in turn. ac tuate the diaphragm 20 which aniplilies the sound. The sound waves then pass through the tubes 0 and 10 and are modified so that a loud. distinct and pleasing tOnc issues troin the front of" the device. 2. A loud speaker for a sound transmit ting. apparatus having in combination, a panel, a sound reproducing device including a diaphragm spaced from said panel, a cylindrical tone l'i'rodifying device disposed between said sound reproducing device and said panel and arranged co-axially with said diaphragm, and means secured to said sound reproihicing device and said panel for holding all of said parts in position.
3. A loud speaker for a sound dispensing apparatus having in combination, a panel, a sound reproducing device including a diaphragm spaced from said panel, a cylindrical lone modifying device disposed between said reproducing device and said panel, a member embracing said sound reproducing device and extending at each side thereof, and spaced means secured to said member and extending at each side of said tone modifying device and secured to said panel for supporting all of said parts from said panel.

A loud speaker for a sound transmitting apparatus having in combination, a panel, a telephone receiver spaced from said panel, a tone modifier comprising a plurality of cylindrical members disposed between said receiver and panel, a collar embracing said transmitter, and s aced rods extending from said collar to sai panel and securing and clamping said parts to said panel whereby all of said parts are supported from said panel.
5. A loud speaker for a sound transmltting apparatus having in combination, a panel having a cylindrical openin therethrough, a casing having a cylindrical passage therethrough extending at one side of said panel with said passage alined with said opening, a tube secured in said casing at the end thereof remote from said panel, a smaller tube secured in said tube co-axially therewith, adjacent the end thereof nearest said panel, said smaller tube having a slot therethrough, yielding spacing means between said tubes and alined with said slot, and securing means connecting said tubes and extending through said spacing means.
6. A tone modifying device comprising a tube of elastic material supported adjacent one end, a smaller tube disposed in said tube co-axially therewith and spaced from the walls thereof having a slot through the end thereof remote from the said end of said first mentioned tube, a yielding spacing means between said tubes alined with said slot, and securing means passing through said tubes and spacing means and clamping said spacing means therebetween, whereby said spacing means protrudes into said slot and assists in maintainin said tubes in axial alinement.
7. The structure set forth in claim 6, said securing means comprising spaced bolts, said outer tubes having spaced holes through which said bolts pass, said bolts also passing through said slot in said smaller tube, and members formed of resilient material surrounding said bolts at both ends and spanning said holes and said slot respectively.
8. A tone modifying device comprising a tube of elastic material supported adjacent one end, a smaller tube disposed in said tube co-axially therewith and spaced from the walls thereof, spacing meansbetween said tubes adjacent one end thereof, securing means holding said tubes in co-axial relation, and means secured to said inner tube spaced from said securing means for placing said inner tube under stress.
9. The structure set forth in claim 8, said last mentioned means comprising a resilient member extending longitudinally along the interior of said inner tube secured at one end and being under stress and secured at its other end.
10. A tone modifying device comprising a tube of elastic material supported adjacent one end, a smaller tube disposed in said tube co-axially therewith and spaced from the walls thereof having a slot through the end thereof remote from the said end of said first mentioned tube, said first mentioned tube having a recess on its inner side, a yielding splacing means between said tubes alined wit said slot and recess, and securing means passing through said tubes and spacing means and clamping said spacing means therebetween, whereby said spacing means protrudes into said slot and recess and assists in maintaining said tubes in axial alinement.
11. A loud speaker for a sound transmitting apparatus having in combination, a panel, a sound reproducing device including a diaphragm spaced from said panel, a cylindrical tone modifying device disposed between said sound reproducing device and said panel and arranged co-axially with said diaphragm, and means for holding said parts in fixed relative position.
