4 This invention relates to an improved article of 'manufacture for disposition in a sound wave conducting horn such as is used in connection with talking machines of various kinds, radio apparatus, etc.
My principal aim is to provide a simple and inexpensive device which includes novel parts. associated in such a manner as to intercept and act on the emitted sound waves in such a way as to subdue and to otherwise change the quality of the tone to render it more resonant and lacking in objectionable. noises. a
The features forming the improved structure will become readily-apparent fromthe following description and drawings.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a side elevation of a conven-' tional form of horn with a portion broken away to show the improved tone modifier .on the interior thereof.
Fig. 2 is a sectional view through the Fig. 3 is a transverse section taken approximately upon the plane of the line 33 of Fig. 2.
The improved device comprises a pair of inner and outer conduit parts 1 and 2 respectively arranged in telescopic relation. The parts are of similar configuration. The part 1 comprises a flared intake 3 in which a spring 4: is arranged. The spring is in the form of a flat stri of metal coiled in a customary manner. 81? course, it does not function as a spring, but is simply present to intercept and act upon Waves passed between the convolutions.
Adjacent this spring is a partition made up of intersecting slotted strips 5. Extending beyond this partition is relatively large flared discharge 6 terminating in a flange 7 which fits into snug contact to the interior of the horn 8. The part 2 fits within the flared discharge 6 as represented plainly in Fig. 2 and this part also comprises a flared intake 9 and an oppositely flared discharge 10. .Here a ain, there is a partition at the juncture of t e ortions 9 and 10, the same being made up 0 slotted strips a. The flared intake 9 is provided with a vibratory diaphragm 11 having a central sound wave hole 12. Arranged between this diaphra m and the partition is a relatively small coi ed metal strip 13. In addition, another coiled strip 14 like the one 4 is arranged in the discharge 10. This discharge 10 extends be 0nd the flan e 7. t is obvious t at by disposing the devi in the interior of the horn as represented in Fig. 1, the sound waves will encounter the same and the various parts thereof which Wlll act to subdue the tone and change its quality so that it will be more resonant than is usually the case. Under the condition indicated, the scratching noises and other foreign sounds which ordinarily accompany the sound waves will be less noticeable and, in' fact, hardly audible.
It is believed that by considering the desscription in connection with the drawings,
persons familiar with devices of this kind will be able to obtain a clear understanding of the construction and action of the same. Therefore a more lengthy description is thought unnecessary.
While the preferred embodiment of the invention has been shown and described, it 1 is to be understood that minor changes coming withinothe field of invention claimed connected parts, each of which inclu es oppositely flared end portions, and means in said parts for modifying sounds passing through the parts.
3. (As a new article of manufacture, atone modifier for disposition in a horn, said modifier embodying telescopically connected parts, each of which includes oppositely flared portions, and means arranged in the flared portions of the respective parts for I intercepting the sound waves to modify and subdue the same to render foreign noises less noticeable.
4. A tone modifier for disposition in a horn, comprising a conduit part, and a coiled member arranged transversely in the conduit part and having spaces between its convolu; tions for the passage of sound.
-5. A tone modifier for disposition in a horn, comprisin a conduit part, a coiled member arrange transversely in the conduit part and having spaces between its convolutions for the passage of sound, and means in the conduit part and in rear of the coiled member for intercepting the passage of sound to the said coiled member.
6. A tone modifier for disposition in a horn, comprising inner and outer telescopi-- cally connected conduit parts, each of which includes flared end portions, a coiled member arranged transversely in the rear portion of the outer part and having spaces between its convolutions for the passage of sound,
memes means arranged in the outer conduit part and in front of said coiled member for inter/- cepting the passage of sound, a diaphragm arranged at the rear end of the inner conduit part and having a small'opening for the passage of sound, spaced coiled members arranged in the inner conduit part-and spaced apart and each having spaces between its convolutions for the passage of sound, and means arranged in the inner conduit part and between and spaced from said coiled members for intercepting the passage of" sound through said. inner conduit part.
ln testimony whereof I affix my signature.
WILLIAM DEERFOOT.
