Description

H. BEHNING & 1. 'DIEHL.
Name-Board for Piano-Fortes, &c.
NO ]6Q'29Q Patented March 2,i875.

HEGRAPHIC C0.PHOTOrLITH-39B=41PARK PLACE N Y NI'IED STATES PATENT HENRY BEHNING AND JUSTUS DIEHL, OF NEW YORK, N. Y
lMPROVEMENT IN NAME-BOARDS FOR PIANO-FORTES, &o.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 160,299, dated March 2, 1875; application filed.
Jann ary 22, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, HENRY BEHNING and J USTUS DIEHL, both of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Name-Boards for lianos and Organs; and we hereby declare the following to he a full, clear, and exact description of the same, enabling others skilled in the art to manufacture and use our i1nproved name-hoard.
The object of our invention is to provide for a name-board, or the board in front of the keys, which allows the free use of the players fingers on the inner part of the piano or organ keys without touching the said board, and scratching the same with the linger-nails, as is the case with the straight name-board now in use, when the inner keys are touched to produce the forte.
Our invention consists in forming the lower part of the name-board concave, instead of having it straight, as is now the case,
It is an acknowledged fact that the straight name-board is a great impediment to the free use of the pianists and organists fingers on the keys, because the finger-ei'ids, when sliding on the keys in the direction toward the name-board, which is done to produce the forte, are liable to touch the same, and thus preventii'ig the free use of the fingers, which, at the same time, scratch and soil the instrument.
()ur invention will be more readily understood by reference to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, of which Figure I is afront elevation of our improved name-board. Fig. II is a sectional View of the same.
A is the name-board. B is a concavity grooved or cut into the face or front of the same. G are the keys. E is the key-frame.
Having thus described our invention, we desire to claim- A name-board for pianos and organs havin g a longitudinal concave groove cut into the front or outer side, substantially as shown, and for the purpose set forth.
