Interfering-Boot for Horses. M1160 248 Paiemedmuzsnam THE GRAPHIC CO.PHOTO-LITH39&41 BARK PLAOE,N-Y.

ABRAHAM D. WESTBROOK, OF ASTORIA, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN lNTERFERlNG-BOOTS FOR HORSES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 160,248, dated February 23, 1875; application filed June 23, 1874.
a part of this specification.
This invention is in the nature of an interfering-boot for horses; and the invention consists in an elastic annulus, constructed with elastic spurs around its periphery, substantially as hereinafter described.
It is well known that one of the chief difficulties encountered in using interfering-boots is, that the interfering foot is apt to displace the boot, leaving the ankle exposed. Another difficulty is, that the boots provided with straps are, when applied by inexperienced hands, frequently strapped so tightly as to interfere with circulation in the horses ankle, and cause swelling, &c. These objections are, it is believed, fully obviated by my invention, as will be seen from the following description and accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure l is a plan view of my invention; and Fig. 2 is a cross-section of same, taken in the line a0 :12, Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts in the two figures.
A represents an interfering-boot for horses. This boot is made from india-rubber or other suitable elastic material, and is in the form of an unbroken annulus, B. Formed with or otherwise secured to the periphery of the annulus B are a series of elastic spurs, 0.
My boot being constructed substantially as above described, its operation is as follows: To apply the boot, it is stretched so as to enlarge the annulus sufficiently to permit it to pass over the horses hoof, up to the ankle or place that is injured by the interfering hoot, where the elasticity of the material from which the boot is constructed retains it in place with an elastic pressure not at all injurious to the horse; and when the interfering hoof comes in contact with the boot it strikes the spurs O, which effectually guard the ankle from injury, and, if the boot should turn around the ankle the spurs, being continuous, will always present themselves to the action of the interfering hoof.
I am aware that interfering-pads have been made of rubber, with points projecting therefrom; but such points are applied to a portion only of the band, and hence, when the band slips and the points thus depart from the position of contact, the pad becomes practically useless.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
An interfering pad or boot for horses, composed of an elastic annulus or band, with yielding points projecting from its entire outer surface, substantially as specified.
