SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 614,842, dated November 29, 1898.

To all whom t may concern:

Be it known that I, EDWIN GRALL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Alma Centre, in the county of Jackson and Stateof Wisconsin, have invented a new and useful Horse-Boot, of which the following is a specification.

The purpose of the present invention is the provision of a protector for preventing injury to the limbs of animals from interfering or other causes resulting in chafing or rubbing the parts opposite the joint by striking them when the animal is speeded or in motion.

The protector is chieiiy designed for shielding the fetlock or pastern-joint, and in its construction comprises a band for encircling the leg of the animal contiguous to the joint, a loop applied to the band and projecting from an edge thereof, and a rubber or other flexible ring secured in the projecting end of the loop and having its sides recessed to admit of the sides of the loop coming-Hush with the ring and the Iiattened portion of the latter being gripped between the sides of the loop, whereby the said ring is maintained in proper position.

For a full understanding of the merits and advantages of the invention reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings and the following description.

The improvement is susceptible of various changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages thereof, and to a full disclosure of the invention an adaptation thereof is shown in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of the protector. Fig. 2 is a transverse section thereof. Fig. 3 is a detail view in perspective of the rubber or elastic ring. Fig. 4 is a detail section showing the sides of the loop coming flush with the sides of the ring.

Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in the drawings by the same reference characters.

The band 1 is constructed to have the end portions overlap and be secured by means of a strap 2 and buckle 3, said parts being secured to opposite ends of the band. This band is composed of two layers of leather or like material, which are stitched together at their longitudinal edges and between which is placed a metal strip 4t, sufficiently pliable to be bent, `so as to conform to the out-line of the leg of the animal to which the device is fitted. This band will be provided in differsides of the ring 6, so as to retain the latter in an operative position. This loop is of tapering form and is stitched or otherwise rigidly connected at its inner end with the band 1.

The ring G, of rubber or like material, is formed with recesses 7in its sides at the point designed to be fitted between the parts of the projecting ends of the loop 5. These recesses 7 are of a lengt-h corresponding to the'width of the outer end of the loop 5 and are of a depth corresponding to the thickness of the material from which the loop is formed, whereby when the ring is in position with the loop the sides of the latter will come flush with the sides of the ring, thereby preventing the loop from rubbing and chaing the animal. The provision of the recesses also results in iiattening the opposite sides of the ring, and these iiattened faces, coming against the inner sides of the loop, serve to hold the ring from turning and in line with the loop, which is essential in order tomaintain said ring in a proper position to afford protection to the fetlock or pastern-joint.

In a protector of the characterset forth, the combination of a band, a loop secured at one end to the band and having its other end portion projecting beyond an edge thereof, and a ring of rubber or like material supported in the free end of the loop, and having the sides opposite the loop recessed to receive the side portions of the loop and admit of their coming flush with the sides of the ring, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

2. The herein-described protector comprising a band, composed of layers having seoured between them a iiexible metal strip and provided at its ends with means for securing the device to the leg of an animal, a loop setion when in service, substantially as set' forth.
