IMPROVEMENT IN SHIRTS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 160,245, dated February 23, 1875; application filed January 27, 1875.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, JAMES TWAMLEY, of St. Paul, Ramsey county, in the State of Minnesota, have invented Improvements in Gentlemens Dress-Shirts; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, .and to. the letters of reference marked thereon.

Previous to my invention it has been the practice in the making or manufacture of dress-shirts to make the tail or lower portion with slits or cutslocated at each side, and extending from the lower edge of the shirt upward some distance, so as to form a front and a back flap, so to speak. In wearing shirts thus made the tucking into the pants (or v drawers) of the flaps necessarily tends to these two objectionable results, viz., first, the slitted portions at each side permit the outer upper portion of each leg of the person to go uncovered by the shirt-tail; secondly, the material composing the front and rear flaps or halves of the tail has to be folded or gathered in between the legs at the crotch and seat of the person in an uncomfortable condition. My invention has for its object to overcome these objections to shirts, as heretofore made, and afford to the wearer a shirt which will fit more-comfortably and better cover and protect the person; and to these ends and objects my invention consists in making the shirt with slits or cuts located (centrally) at the front and back portions of the tail, in lieu of at each side, as heretofore, whereby side flaps are formed in such manner that each half or portion of the tail serves to completely cover the upper portion of each limb of the wearer, (after the fashion of a pantsleg,) and all surplusage of material between the legs or at the crotch is avoided when the shirt is tucked into the pants.

A represents the bosom, B the body portion, 0 the sleeves, and D the flap or skirt, of a gentlemans dress-shirt made in all respects in the usual manner except as to the tail-flaps.

In lieu of the tail D or lower portion of the shirt being slitted or cut at each side, it is out vertically immediately in the front and rear, as shown at f g and h c. In this manner the lower part of the shirt, instead of being formed into front and back flaps or halves, is divided into two side flaps, which, when the shirt-tail is tucked in, (in dressing,) naturally surround the thighs or upper parts of the legs of the wearer, as illustrated at m m, Fig. 3. It will be seen that in wearing a shirt thus made all the uncomfortable and undesirable accumulation of material which, with the ordinary shirt, occurs at the crotch and seat of the person is wholly avoided, and the shirttail is rendered capable of fitting neatly and snugly around the upper portion of each leg of the wearer, so that the drawers and pants legs (and upper portions) will not be bulged or distorted in shape or appearance. The outer or side portions of the limbs and body of the person will be perfectly covered and protected, and any tendency of the body and bosom of the shirt to creep up will also be more or less overcome by reason of the shirt being better held down, since the flaps 'surrounding the legs give to the shirt-tail the capacity of fitting into the crotch and about the body of the person somewhat after-the fashion of the drawers or other similar garments of mens wear.

It will be understood that in the practice of my invention in the manufacture of shirts it will be expedient to cut the lower portion of the shirt and the slits forming the side flaps in accordance with the shape and size of the person by whom the shirt is to be worn, and that my improved shirt can be made smaller at the lower part than shirts now made, and both save material and conduce to greater comfort. The slits or cuts f g and h i should be extended upward, so far as to permit the complete surrounding of the thigh and the formation of a crotch or temporary leg portions, as it were, when the shirt is put on.

In the use of my improved shirt, great 0011- venienee over the old-fashioned shirt will be experienced by the Wearer in its closer and nicer fit. If found expedient the flaps may be cut away, as illustrated by the dotted lines at Fig. 1, so as to have less overlapping of each flap when tucked around the leg.

Having fully explained the nature and operation of my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

A shirt having its flaps or skirt portions divided in front and rear, substantially as described and shown, and for the purpose set forth.
