COMBINATION MOUNTING FOR DIAL MECHANISMS.
- Application filed November My invention relates to combination mountings for dial mechanisms, and it has for its principal object to provide suitable means for mounting upon the dash-board of an automobile the several instruments which it is customary to provide. It is one of the objects of my invention to provide a unit structure for the several mechanisms such that the mechanisms themselves are held properly in position and are adapted to be removed readily from position and such that the entire mounting with the instruments in position thereon may 'be readily removed from the dash-board as may be desired. It is another object to improve mechanisms of this type in sundry details hereinafter pointed out. The preferred means by which I have accomplished my several objects are illustrated in the drawings and are hereinafter specifically described. That which I believe to be new and desire to cover by Letters Patent is set forth in the claims.
In the drawings Fig. 1 is a front view showing my improved mounting in position upon the dashboard of an automobile.

Fig. 3 is a vertical cross-section taken on line 33 of Fig. 1.
Referring to the several figures of the drawings in which corresponding parts are indicated by the same reference characters, 10 indicates the dash-board of an automobile having a suitable opening therein to receive a bezel ring 11 as is best shown in Fig. 3. The ring 11 is preferably formed bycasting having secured therein a plurality of screw-threaded pins 12 spaced about the periphery of the ring and extending from the rear face thereof. The outer ends of the pins 12 extend through suitable openings in lugs 13 extending inward from one edge of a clamping ring 141 which bears at its front edge against the dash-board 10. Suitable nuts upon the outer ends of the screw-threaded pins 12 serve to clamp the ring 11 securely in place.
A plate glass or crystal 15 is mounted in the forward edge portion of the ring 11 with its beveled outer edge in contact with the bezel of the ring. A sealing ring 16 is mounted in the ring 11 adjacent to the crys- 10, 1919. Serial No. 337,059.
tal 15, with a dial 17 and a plate 18 next in position in said ring. The plate 18 is provided with a flange 19 at its outer edge, from which flange perforated lugs 20 extend outwardly in position to embrace the pins 12. Suitable nuts mounted upon the pins 12 between the lugs 20 and the lugs 13 of the clamping ring 14 are adapted to be tightened against the lugs 20 for gripping the dial, the sealing ring and the crystal firmly in position in the ring 11.
In the construction shown pressure gauges 21 and 22 are mounted on the rear face of the plate 18 with indicating hands 23 in position on the front face of the dial 17 in proper position with respect to suitable markings upon the dial as is shown in Fig. 1. These gauges are removably held in position by means of bars 24 secured by means of screws upon the rear face of the plate 18. The plate 18 is provided with a flanged opening25 forthe reception of an ammeter, the flange 26 serving as a casing for the ammeter, the rear face of the casing being closed by plate 27 which is re movably held in position by means of a bar 28 secured by suitable screws upon the rear face of the plate 18. In the construction shown the indicating hand 29 is pivotally mounted upon the front face of the dial by means of a suitable bracket 30, the hand being in proper position relative to suitable markings upon the dial. The operative parts of the ammeter are preferably made detachable from the arbor upon which the hand 29 is mounted so that the parts of the ammeter located on the rear face of the dial 17 can be readily withdrawn from operative position without disturbing the hand 29.
A speedometer 31 of any suitable type is I mounted upon the rear face of the plate 18 in a suitable socket formed therein, being held in position by means of screws 32 mounted in the plate 18 and extending through brackets 33 carried by the casing of the speedometer. The ring 14% is provided with a suitable opening 3 1 for the reset stem 35 of the speedometer shown. The dial 17 is provided withsuitable openings and suitable markings for the indicating members of the speedometer, as is clearly shown in Fig. 1.
As will be readily understood, the ring 11 and the plate 18 constitute in effect a two .the several instruments.
2. A mechanism for mounting a combination of instruments upon a dash-board,
comprising a frame adapted to fit substantially a suitable opening in the board and having a flange extendlng beyond the edge of the opening on its front face, a plurality ofindicating instruments mounted on sald' frame, a ring surroundlng said frame and bearing at its front face against the dashboard, and means for securing said ring to said frame serving to hold the frame removably in position.
3. In a mechanism for mounting a combination of instruments upon a dash-board, the combination of a frame comprising a ring adapted to fit substantially a suitable opening in the boardv and having a flange extending beyond the edge of the opening on its front face, and comprising further a plate secured to said ring, a plurality of indicating instruments mounted on said plate, a second ring surrounding said frame and bearing at its front face against the dashboard, and means for securing said second ring to said frame for holding'the frame removably in position.
4. A. mechanism for mounting a combina tion of instruments upon a dash-board, comprising a frame adapted to it substantially a suitable opening in the board and having a flange extending beyond the edge of the opening on its front face, a plurality of indicating instruments mounted on said frame, a ring surrounding said frame and hearing at its front face against the dashboard, lugs extending inwardly from said ring at its rear edge, screw-threaded pins extending rearwardly from said frame through suitable openings in said lugs, and nuts on said pins for clamping said ring and said frame together for holding the frame removably in position.
5. A mechanism for mounting a combination of instruments upon a dash-board, comprising a cast metal frame adapted to fit substantially a suitable opening in the board and having a flange extending beyond the edge of the opening on its front face, a plurality of indicating instruments mounted on said'frame, a plurality of screw-threaded pins fixedly secured by the casting operation in said frame and extending rearward- 1y therefrom, and a ring secured on said pins and bearing on said dash-board serving to hold said frame removably in position.
6. A mechanism for mounting a combina- 1y therefrom, a ring surrounding said frame Q and hearing at its front face against the dashboard, perforated lugs extending inwardly from said ring at its rear edge through the openings in which said pins pass, and nuts on said pins for clamping said ring and said frame together for holding the frame removably inposition.
7. The combination of a frame-plate, a ring surrounding said plate and having a flange extending inwardly a short distance opposite the front face of said plate, a dial in position on the front face of said plate, a plate-glass in front of said dial, means for spacing said glass from said dial, and means for securing said ring andzsaid plate together serving to clamp said glass and said dial in position.

9. In a mechanism for mounting a combination of instruments upon a. dash-board, the combination of a frame-plate, a ring surrounding said plate and having a flange extending inwardly a short distance opposite the front face of said plate, said ring being adapted to fit substantially a suitable opening in the dash-board and having a flange extending outwardly beyond the edge of the opening on its front-face, means for clamping said ring removably in position in said opening,a dial in position on the front face of said plate, a plate-glass in front of said dial, and means for securing said ring and said plate together for clamping said dial and said glass in position.
10. In a mechanism for mounting a com-- bination of instruments upon a dash-board, the combination of a frame-plate, a ring sur rounding said plate and having a flange extending inwardly a short distance opposite the front face of said plate, said ring being adapted to fit substantially a suitable opening in the dash-board and having a flange extending outwardly beyond the edge of the opening on its front face, a dial in position on the front face of said plate, a plate-glass in front of said dial, screw-threaded pins extending from the rear face of said ring and passing through suitable openings in said plate, nuts on said pins adapted to clamp said ring and said plate together for holding said dial and said glass in position, and other clamping means secured on said pins adapted to hold said ring and said plate in position in the opening in the dashboard.
11. In a mechanism for mounting a combination of instruments upon a dash-board, the combination of a frame-plate, a ring surrounding said plate and having a flange extending inwardly a short distance opposite the front face of said plate, said ring being adapted to fit substantially a suitable opening in the dash-board and having a flange extending outwardly beyond the edge of the opening on its front face, a dial in position on the front face of said plate, a plateglass in front of said dial, screwthreaded pins extending from the rear face of said ring and passing through suitable openings in said plate, nuts on said pins adapted to clamp said ring and said plate together for holding said dial and said glass in position, a second ring surrounding said first-named ring and said plate and bearing at its front face on the dash-board, said second ring having openings through which said pins pass, and nuts on said pins adapted to clamp said second ring to said plate for holding the plate removably in position on the board.
12. The combination of a frame with openings therein, indicating instruments supported by the frame in said openings, said frame having flanges around the openings fitting said instruments, and means for detachably securing each instrument to the frame in its opening adapted to permit removal of such instrument independently of the others.
13. In combination an instrument board having an opening therein, a frame and means for securing it in the opening, said frame having a plurality of apertures, a plurality of instruments mounted in the apertures respectively, a transparent cover plate on the frame through which the instruments may be observed, and fastening means by which each of the instruments is removably secured in its opening in the frame independently of the other instruments.
14. In combination, a circular frame having a plurality of circular apertures therethrough arranged with their centers substantially equidistant from a central point on said frame, a plurality of instruments secured, one in each of said apertures, and a single cover plate through which the indicating devices of said instruments may be observed.
15. In combination, an instrument board having an opening therein, a frame larger than said opening and having apertures therethrough, a plurality of instruments secured one in each of said apertures, a cover plate on said frame insertible in said opening and through which said instruments may be observed, and means for securing said frame against said instrument board.
