This invention relates to garments and means for supporting the same upon the body of the wearer, and is of particular utility when embodied in the construction of such garments as gowns, dresses, bathing-suits, costume-slips, vests, chemises, under-suits, undershirts. brassieres, aprons, and other articles of underwear or outer wear made of cotton, wool, slik, arti any suitable material, and I ficial silk or contemplate from slipping down from the the wearer on either side of shoulder of the body, a

Another object of the invention is to provide adjustable, flexible retaining devices for the above purpose which may form an integral part. of the garment structure, or may be formed separately and applied by the wearer as required.

In carrying the invention into effect, I prefer to utilize flexible tapes or ribbons of fabric which may be of elastic or nonelastic material, and these tapes may be se-- cured to the straps by stitching, or by adjustable clips, and may be similarly secured to the body of the garment either at the front or the back thereof, and erably will extend mediate portion of each strap central. portion of the upper margin of the p which prefdiagonally from an intertoward the garment, passing through suitable apertures in said margin and extend ng to a convenient point at the middle of margin where the tapes may be the upper loose ends of the flexible brought out conveniently in position to be tied together adjustably in a bowknot.

In pursuance of t-heinvention, I have shown at 3 and. 4, retaining members of flexible material, such as ribbon or tape, formed of elastic or non-elastic material as may be preferred, these retaining members being shown as stitched at 5 to intermediate por tions of the straps 2 Iespectively, and extending diagonally therefrom toward the upper margin 6 of the garment, where the loose ends of the members 3 and 4 are inserted through suitable apertures 7 in a transverse pocket 8, such as that usually found in such garments for the purposeof enclosing a shirr-string 9 of ribbon or the like, the ends of which pass out through an aperture 10 at the middle of the front portion of the garment, being there tied in a bowknot 11.

In Figs. 1 and 2. the ends 12 of the retaining members are shown as brought out through the same aperture and tied in a separate bowknot 13, so that by drawing them more or less tightly the retaining members will serve adjustably to accommodate themselves to the size of the body of the wearer. I

In Fig. 3, I have shown a modification in which the loose ends 12 are brought out through separate holes 14 on each side of the central hole 10, so that they will be separate from the bowknot 11 and may be tied in a knot which will not interfere with the knot 11.

In each of the forms illustrated, the retaining member constitutes an eifective de-v vice for holding the shoulder strap in its desired position, the retaining member being readily adjustable to secure its intended eflect.

Having illustrated and described my invention thus fully, it is to be understood that I do not limit myself to any specific material or structural form of the retaining member, nor in general otherwise than as set forth in the claims read in connection with this specification.

What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A garment of the class described, comprising a body portion, flexible supporting straps therefor ada ted to extend in an upright position over t e shoulders of the wearer, and flexible adjustable retaining members for said straps, said retaining members being attached to said straps at an intermediate portion thereof respectively, each retaining member passing from its said point of attachment diagonally downward to a point of connection with said bod portion, and having free ends each 'exten ing from the connection with saidbodyortion, the free ends being adapted to be tied together adjustably across the body of the wearer.

2. A garment of the class described, comprising a body portion, flexible supporting straps therefor adapted to extend in an upright position over the shoulders of the wearer, and flexible adjustable retaining members for said straps, said retaining members being attached to said straps at an intermediate portion thereof respectively and adapted to be tied together adjustably across the body of the wearer, passing diagonally from their respective points of attachment to said; straps downward toward spaced points of connection with said body portion right position over the shoulders of the wearer, and flexible adjustable retaining members for said straps, said retaining members being attached to said straps at an intermediate ortion thereof respectively and ada ted to e tied together adjustably across the ody of the wearer, passln diagonally from theirrespective points 0 attachment to said straps downward toward spaced points of connection with said body portion and thence passing through a pocket in the upper margin of said body ortion to a plurality of central apertures, w ere they emerge in juxtaposition to each other.
