UNITED STATES PATENT OFFIoE.
WILLIAM COOPER, OF YPSILANTI, MICHIGAN.
IMPROVEMENT IN STEAM-GENERATORS FOR COOKING, &c.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 160,165, dated February 23, 1875 application filed 4 January 9, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM COOPER, of Ypsilanti, in the county of Washtenaw and in the State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Steam-Generators for Cooking and Washing; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction of a steam-generator for heating water for cooking purposes, and for washing clothes, and for other purposes, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which Figure 1 is a vertical section of my machine, and Fig. 2 is a section of the upper portion of the fire-box and steam-generator. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section of a pounder, which may be used for washing clothes with my machine.
A represents the fire-box or heater, made flaring, with its top part larger than its bottom, as shown, and covered at the top. At the lower end of the fire-box A is the grate a, and below the same is the ash-pit or ash-chamber B. The fire-box or heater A is surrounded by a casing, O, in flaring form, leaving a chamber, D, between the two shells, which is filled with water. The shell (J is also closed on top, the chamber D extending over between the covers or tops of the two shells, said tops being of slightly conical form or convex on their upper sides. From the center of the top of the shell 0 a pipe, E, extends into the upper end of a tub or vessel, Gr, provided near its lower end with a grating, 12, upon which the clothes are placed. Below the grating b the vessel G is connected by an inclined pipe, H,
with the water-chamber D. Fuel is inserted into the shell A through the smoke-pipe J by raising a slide, I, in the same.
The steam and hot Water pass up through the pipe E into the vessel G. and pass through the clothes back into the heater, thus forming a steady and continuous circulation through the clothes. When the clothes have been steamed in this way for about ten or fifteen minutes, the cover of the vesseLG is taken off and the clothes pounded for a few minutes, when the clothes will be washed and entirely cleansed from all dirt.
The shells of the heatenshould be made steam-tight, and the water covers the entire heating-surface, thereby preventing it from burning out.
By forming the fire-box A in an upward flaring form, as shown and described, the heat generated is caused to expand in the upper part of the box and there retained, and forms a large heating-surface.
The steam from the generator may be used for other purposes, and carried to any place desired by simply attaching a hose, P, to the end of the pipe E.
The water may be drawn off by any suitable means.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
Ihe combination of the fire-box or heater A, having grate a, and made flaring from bottom to top, as shown, the flaring chamber D, pipe J, with slide I, and the pipe E, all substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 12th day of December, 1874.
WM. COOPER.
