GQA'. WELLS. Steam Generator Patented April 19,1881.
I I C l I II] Inward-0r.
ETER. OGR w| UNIT D STATES I PATENT GEORGE A. WELLS OF OSKALOOSA, IOWA.
STEAM-GENERATOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 240,292, dated April 19, 1881.
Application filedDecember 15, 1880.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GEORGE A. Inns, of Oskaloosa, in the county of Mahaska and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Steam-Generators; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 is a perspective view. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view, and Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view on the line 00 a; of Fig. 2.
Corresponding parts in the several figures are denoted by like letters of reference.
This invention relates to steam-generators; and it consists in certain improvements in the construction of the same, which will be hereinafter fully described ,and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings hereto annexed, A represents the outer shell, and B the inner shell or fire-chamber, of my improved stean'i-generator. The said inner shell or fire-box is provided with a top or dome having a smoke-stack, O, and a hinged cover, D, through which the fire may be fed. The space between the inner and outer shells is partitioned horizontally into.
two compartments, the upper one of which, E, is provided with one or more openings, F, for the admission of feed-water. tition G, which forms the bottom of the upper compartment, a pipe, H, extends down to within a short distance of the bottom of the lower compartment, J, to which the water, which has first been partially heated in the upper compartment, is thus constantly fed or supplied.
l is a pipe coiled within the firebox, as shown, and communicating through an opening in shell B with the lower compartment, J, near the bottom of the latter. The upper end of pipe I extends through the shell B 5 just below the bottom of the upper compartment, and into a steam-chest, K. The latter is provided, at or near its top, with a pipe, L, extending through shell A, and having a nipple, M, for connection with the pipe or pipes through which steam is conveyed to the point or points where it is to be utilized. From the bottom of steam-chest K a pipe, N, passes down vertically to within a short distance of From the par- (No model.)
the bottom of chamber J, for the purpose of carrying back any condensed steam or water forced up through pipe I, which would otherwise be carried to the radiators.
Arranged under the fire-box is the grate P and ash pan or box Q, in the construction of which no novelty is claimed.
From the foregoing description, taken in. connection with the drawings hereto annexed, the operation and advantages of my invention will be readily understood. The boiler is simple, durable, and economical.
I am aware that a spiral coil of pipe arranged within the furnace of a boiler and connected at its lower end to the lower portion or water-leg of the boiler, and its upper end extending above the water-line, or to the steamdome of the boiler, and also. a water-chamber divided by a horizontal partition into upper and lower compartments communicating with each other, and having a fire-chamber and combustion-flue passing centrally through said compartments, the fire-chamber having a wa ter-tank communicating on different planes with the lower water-compartment, are old in steam-generators, and such I do not wish to be understood as claiming, broadly, as of my invention.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States In a steam-generator, the combination, with the shells A B, forming an interior fire-chamber and a surrounding water-chamber, and the horizontal partition Gr, dividing said waterchamber into upper and lower compartments, E J communicating with each other by a pipe, H, of the coiled pipe I, arranged in the firechamber and communicating at the lower end thereof with the lower end of compartment J, and having its upper end terminating in a steam-chest, K, arranged in the upper portion of the compartment J, and having a dischargepipe and a drip-pipe, N, terminating near the lower end of said compartment J, as and for the purpose herein shown and described.
