GOMPOUND APPLIANCE.
My present invention has to do with compound appliances or tools, and contemplates the provision of a compound app iance adapted with the use of interchangeable attachment to be used to advantage as a valve lifter in automobile repairwork, a valvespring compressor, and a piston-ring contractor.
The invention also contemplates the provision of a tool or appliance so characterized that the operator is enabled to exert great pull or pressure with the expenditure of but little effort.
To the attainment of the foregoing, the invention consists in the improvement as hereinafter described and definitely claimed.

Among other elements my novel appliance comprises a body bar and a pressure bar 2, the said bars 1 and 2 beingr pivotally connected together at 3, and the bar 1 being equipped adjacent to its heel end with a pivoted keeper member 4 having cross-bars 5 at intervals in its length. The heel end of the pressure bar 2 is headed as designated by 5 for convenient detachable engagement of the saniewvith the cross-bars 5 of the keeper member 4. noted that the pressure bar 2 is provided at an intermediate point in its length with an arcuate portion 6. Pivotally and detachably connected at 7 to the body bar l is an arm 8 for cooperation with the pressure bar 2, the said arm S being adapted in one use of the appliance to receive the arcuate portion 6 of the pressure bar 2, and being equipped with spaced antifriction rollers 9 adapted in said use of the appliance to rest at the opposite sides of the arcuate portion 6 of the pressure bar. The pivotal connection of the pressure bar 2 to the body bar 1 is effected through the medium of a removable pintle or boltk3, and in order to preclude casual displacement of the said pintle, 3 I remploy'a rspring 10 detachably associated with the pin 3 and adapted to serve the Vsame general purpose as a cotter pin. The forward end of the body bar l and arm 8 are bifurcated, and near their forwardends the body bar 1 and arn'iS are provided with removable bolts 11 and 12. The bifurcations alluded to are designed for the reception o-f the shanks of` jaws land 14 and also for the reception of the Shanks of jaws 15 and 16 as well as for thereceptibn of the shanks of j aw-like members 17 and 18. The said jaws and jaw-like members being adapted to be used interchangeably as hereinafter described.
By particular reference to Figs. 1, 4 and 5, it will be understood that the jaws 13 and 14 designed lfor use when the appliance is to be employed to compress a valve spring or constructed as best shown in Figs. 4 and 5-i. e., the jaw 13 is provided with inwardly-directed spring engaging portions 13X, and the jaw 14 is provided with inwardlydirected spring engaging portions 14X, the portions 13` being arranged above side walls 13Z and the port-ions. 14 being arranged below side walls '142. Manifestly constructed as described, the jaws 13 and 14 may be depended upon to take secure hold of a spring to be compressed. The jaws 15 and 16 for valve-lifting purposes are shaped as best shown in Figs. 8 and 9, the jaw 15 having inwardlyk directed portions 15 at the lower edges of side walls 15b, and the jaw 16 having spaced arms 16a so that said jaws may be expeditiously and easily engaged with a valve to be lifted.
By comparison of Figs. 1 and 2, it will be readily understood that for valve-spring compressing purpose the pressure bar 2 will be relatively arranged as shown in Fig. 1, While for valve lifting purposes, the pressure bar 2 Will be relatively arranged as shown in Fig. 2. Manifestly in each of the said arrangements the user of the appliance is enabled through the medium of the same to exert great power and this with the eX- penditure of but little effort; and it Will also be manifest that after the positioning of the pressure bar 2 as desired, the said bar 2 may be detachably loclred or fastened in position by engaging the end 5X of the same With the keeper member 5.
The jaW-lile members 17 and 18 of the piston-ring squeezing or contracting means are pivotally connected to plates 19, and the said plates 19 are riveted or otherwise {X- edly secured to a band 20 adapted to take about a piston ring and having lapped portions 21, Fig. 3. Vhen the appliance is to be used to contract or squeeze a piston ring, the band 20 is arranged about the piston ring, and the Working parts of the appliance are relativelv arranged as shown in Fig. 3, and the contraction or squeezing of the piston ring is brought about by the movement of the pressure bar 2 toward the body bar 1.
The forward ends of the body bar 1 and arm 8 are bifurcated as designated by 22, and the said jaws and jawlile members are provided With lateral projections 23 adapted to take into the said bifurcations 22. By virtue of this provision it Will be understood that When the jaws or jaw-like members Which are bifurcated at their ends as designated by 211 are arranged in engagement with the bolts 11 and 12, the jaWs and jawlike members will be securely held to the body bar 1 and arm 8; and it Will be noticed in this connection that it is not necessary for the bolts 11 and 12 to be removable. On the other hand, the jaws and atvlike members are simply moved rectilinearly into and out of engagement With the body bar 1 and the arm 8.
It Will be apparent from the foregoing that notwithstanding the capacity of-function ascribed to my novel compound appliance, the appliance is simple and inexpensive in construction, is Well adapted to Withstand the usage to Which automobile tools and appliances are ordinarily subjected, and is highly efficientin .each of the,uses for which it is adapted.
I have entered into a detailed description vof the construction and relative arrangement of parts embraced in the present and preferred embodiment of my invention in order to impart a full, clear, and exact understanding of the said embodiment. VI do not desire', however, to be understood as limiting myself to the precise construction disclosed, my invention being defined by my appended claims Within the scope of which modifications may be made Without departure from my invention.
Having described my invention, What I claim and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is
1. In an appliance and in combination, a body bar, a keeper member on the heel portion thereof, a pressure bar pivotally l'conf nected With the body bar and having an intermediate arcuate portion, said pressure bar at its rear end being adapted to be engaged Withthe keeper member, and an arm pivotally lconnected with the body bar at an intermediate point in the length of the latter and having antifriction means for cooperation with the arcuate portion of the pressure bar.
2. In an appliance and in combination, a body bar, a pressure bar pivotally connected at an intermediate point in the length of the body bar to said body bar and having an intermediate arcuate portion, and an arm pivotally connected to the body bar at an intermediate point in the vlength thereof and having antifriction means for cooperation with the arcuate portion of the pressure bar.
3. In an appliance and in combination, a body bar, a pressure bar pivotally connected at an intermediate point in the length of the body bar to said body bar and having an intermediate arcuate portion, and an arm pivotally connected to the body bar at intermediate points in the length thereof and having antifriction means for cooperation With the arcuate portion of the pressure bar; the said arm being shaped to receive the arcuate portion of the pressure bar, and the said antifriction means being inV the form of spaced rollers carried in the pressure bar receiving portion of the arm.
4. vIn an appliance and in combination. a body bar, a swingable keeper member on the heel portion of said body bar, a pressure bar pivotally connected to the body bar and adapted to be engaged with said keeper member andhaving an intermediate arcuate portion, and an arm pivotally connected to the body bar and having a portion receiving the arcuate portion of the pressure bar and also having antifriction rollers in said portion.
5. In an appliance and. in combination, a body bar, a swingable keeper member on the heel portion of said body bar, a pressure bar pivotally connected to the body bar and adapted to be engaged with said keeper member and having an intermediate arcuate portion, and an arm pivotally connected to the body bar and having a portion receiving the arcuate portion of the pressure bar and also having antifriction rollers in said portion; the pressure bar being detachably connected tothe body bar, and the arm being detachably connected to the body bar, whereby the pressure bar may be used in reversed position.
6. In an appliance and in combination, a body bar, a pressure bar pivotally connected to the body bar and having an arcuate intermediate portion, an arm pivotally connected to the body bar and having antifriction means for cooperation with said arcuate portion of the pressure bar; the said body bar and the said arms being bifurcated at, their forward ends and being provided in the ends of the bifurcation walls with seats, and being equipped in rear of said seats with transverse devices and combined with jaw-lilas members adapted vto be placed in said bifurcations and bifurcated at their rear ends to receive the said transverse devices and provided with lateral projections adapted to enter and rest in the seats at the ends of the bifurcation walls.
7. An appliance for valve-spring compressing purposes, comprising a body bar, a
keeper member thereon, a pressure bar pivotally connected to the body bar and having an arcuate intermediate portion, an arm pivotally connected to the body bar and having antifriction means for cooperation with said arcuate port-ion of the pressure bar, and jaws carried by the body bar and the said arms and having spaced side walls and also having inwardly directed portions on theupp'er and lower edges, respectively, of said side walls.
8. In an appliance and in combination, a body bar, a pressure bar pivotally connected to the said body bar and having an arcuate intermediate portion, and an arm pivotally connected to the body bar and having means arranged to be opposed to and cooperate with the arcuate portion of the pressure bar when said pressure bar is manipulated.
