This invention relates to boilers, and more particularlyto boilers of the return tube type, and an object of the present invention is to provide a return tube boiler 1 which has a separate fire-box formed of a plurality of water legs which have water feeding communication: with the boiler to permit the pre-heating of the water before its entrance into the boiler.
Another object of the invention is to provide a fire-box structure as specified, in which the rear water leg or side of the fireoox has its upper end inturned, and leadto substantially the transverse center if of the boiler structure for forming a guide for the products of combustion into the lower fines of the boiler, and to prevent return of the products of combustion into the lire-box or into the lower tubes of the boiler after it passes out of the upper tubes into the smoke-box.
A still further object of the invention is to provide in a boiler structure as specified, novel means for conducting the water from the uppermost portions of the water legs to the lowermost portions of the boiler.
Other objects of the invention will appear in the following detail description, and the accompanying drawing, wherein:

Figure 3 is an enlarged detail section of a part of the boiler structure.
Figure 4- is an enlarged detail section illustrating the manner of connecting the end and side water legs for water communication.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 indicates a return tube boiler which has the front and rear fiue carrying plates 2 and 3 and with which the usual type of smoke-box 4 is associated. A fire-box structure 5 is provided which includes the base 6 from which the sides of the fire-box rise. The sides of the lire-box include the front water leg 7, rear water leg 8, and the side water legs 9 and 10. The water legs structures 9 and have their upper edges closed by suitable closure 'plates or blocks 15 against which suitable boiler supporting brackets 16 rest. The blocks 15 are provided at spaced points with pockets or recesses 17 in their inner sides, and water feed pipes 18 are positioned in the waterlegs and have their upper ends opening beneath the pockets or recesses 17. The pipes 18 extend trans- Versely through the fire-box 5 and communicate with a single pipe 19, which in turn communicates with the interior of the boiler structure 1, at its lowest point so that the heated water from within the water legs will overflow into the pipes 18 and will flow downwardly through these pipes into the.
The sides 9 and 10 of the fire-box are connected to the end water legs 7 and 8 by openings such as shown at 22 in Figure 4: of the drawings, to provide a continuous water space about the fire-box. The bridge wall '30 of the fire-box structure is also hollow and provides awater chamber which has communication with the side water legs 9 and 10 through suitable openings 31.

What we claim is 1. The combination with a return tube boiler having front and rear tube plates, of a fire-box, the sides, front and rear of said fire-box being hollow water legs, said rear fire-box water leg having its upper end inturned and engaging in edgewise engagement against said rear tube plate, vertical pipes within certain of said water legs and extending downwardly therethrough and having communication through the fire-box with the lowermost portion of the boiler.
2. In a boiler structure, a boiler, a firm box, water legs forming the walls of said fire-box, vertical pipes within said water legs and extending downwardly through the fire-box and upwardly to said boiler, and
having water feeding communication with the lowermost part of the boiler.
3. The combination with a return tube boiler having front and rear tube plates, of a fire box including side, front and rear water legs, closure plates for the upper ends of said side water legs, pipes vertically disposed in said side water legs and passing through the bottom portion thereof for transverse arrangement in the lire box, the upper ends of said pipes being arranged adjacent the closure plates, a single pipe in comn'iunication with the lower portion of the boiler and the ends ofsaid pipes which are arranged in the fire box, and the upper portion of said rear water legs being tapered and curved to engage the rear tube plate of the boiler for the purpose specified.
