GEORGE FRANZ, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
GOLLAPSIBLE CHAIR.
Application filed February 17,- 1926. Serial No. 88,948.
This invention relates to certain novel improvements in collapsible chairs and has for its principal object the provision of an improved construction of this character which will be highly efiicient in use and economical in manufacture.
Among the salient objects of the invention is the production of an article of this character wherein the article can be expeditiously collapsed to provide a small compact parcel greatly facilitating conveyance or storage thereof.
Astill further object of the.invention is the production of an article of this character wherein there is provided a simple combination and arrangement of parts for collapsing the article by folding seat members thereof upon each other whereby the supportinglegs of article are caused to simultaneously collapse upon folding of the seat members upon themselves.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
The invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings illustrating the preferred form of construction, and in whic 1. I
Fig. 1 is a side elevational view of the invention illustrating the preferred form of construction Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the same;
Fig. 3 is an elevation view of the invention illustrating the same in collapsed vention illustrating a modified form of con-.
struction;
Fig. 8 is an elevational view of the invention illustrating'a still further modified form of construction; and
Fig. 9 is a fragmentary sectional detail view taken substantially on line 9-9 of Fig. 8.
Referring again to-the drawings particularly to Figures 1 to 6 inclusive, the article vention are indicated at 15 and these seat a members when mounted in fiat horizontal position 'have adjacent edges 16 in abutting relation with respect to each other: Formed in these abutting edges are recesses 17 providing a slot 18 for the reception of the reduced portion 14. The seat members are pivotally connected to this reduced portion for pivotal movement in a direction to dispose the seats member in substantially parallel relation with respect to each as best illustrated in Fig. 3, whenthe article is in collapsed condition. This pivotal connection is accomplished through the means of pintles 19 having rivet heads 19' formed thereon to prevent self displacement thereof.
Mounted for slidable movement longitudinally of the body 10 is a connecting collar 20. This collar is guided for movement in said direction through the medium of a guide bolt 21 working in the slots 11.
These slots 11 communicate with a longitudinally extending recess in which there projects an end portion 22 of an operating link 23 having one end connected for operation with the guiding bolt 21 and an opposite end operatively connected to a connecting block 24.
The collar 20 includes separable parts 20.
Pivotally connected to the parts of the collar between ears 25 thereof are link members 26 having outer end portions pivotally connected to the seat members 15 adjacent the ends thereof. This pivotal connected is accomplished through the medium ofpin members 27 carried by brackets 28 having portions 29 confined in recesses 29' formed in the seat members.
Connected to the lower end portion of the body 10, for movement relatively of each other are supporting legs 30. This connec tiOn is accomplished through the medium of hinge members 31. The lower end portions of the legs 30 are pivotally connected to the connectin block 24 through the medium of links 32 aving inner end portions con nected to pins 33 carried by the block 24 and having their opposite ends connected to the legs 30 by means of screw staples 33.
As illustrated in Fig. 2 the seat members 15 are slotted as at 3a to provide hand hold portions 35 facilitating collapsing the chair in the following manner:
To collapse the chair the hand hold positions 35 are firmly grasped by the hands at which time the seat members are pivoted toward each other to move the collar 20 along the body 10 through the medium of the link members 26, movement of the collar being guided by the guide bolt 21. As this collar moves in a direction toward the top of the body movement of the supporting legs is urged toward each other through the me dium of the operating link 23 and links 32.
As is evident from the drawings, when the seat members are disposed in close parallel relation with respect to each other, the supporting legs will be fully collapsed extending substantially in alignment with respect to the body 10. In position of the seat members and supporting legs it is apparent to those skilled in the art that the chair can be collapsed to a small compact condition for purposes herein set forth as one of the obj ects of the invention.
It is also evident from the description herein that by relieving the supporting legs of the weight of the chair that the legs will easily collapse by folding the seat members upon themselves and that the folding action of the seat members will cause the support ing legs to collapse.
'When the chair is in extended position it will be noted that shoulders 36 provided by the reduced portion 14 of the heart of the body will support the seat members when disposed in horizontal alignment.
In describing the modified forms illustrated in Figs. 7 to 9 it is pointed out that parts similar to the parts herein described will be indicated by similar reference char acters.
In Fig. 7 the seat members are operatively connected to supporting feet 37 through the medium of link members 38 and 39 having end portions 38 and 39 respectively operatively connected to operating arms 40 pivotally connected to the body 10 as at 41. In this form of construction the supporting feet are pivotally connected to a reduced head 42 of the body 10., This reduced head is confined in a slot 43 similar to the slot 18. These supporting feet are adapted to be disposed in close parallel relation and substantial alignment with the body 10 when caused to pivot to such position upon folding of the seat members upon themselves in substantial alignment with the body 10.
In Figures 8 and 9 the seat members 15 are pivotally connected to connecting pins 4% working in slot 45 formed in guide plates 46 carried by the body 10. In this form of construction the chair is supported in extended position by driving the tapered end 4:? of the body 10 into the ground. A flange 48 is carried by the body to limit the length of the tapered end to be driven into the ground and to assist in preventing tilting of the body when in use.
The seat members of this construction are likewise folded upon themselves when collapsed.
From the description herein it is apparent that the article can he used as a table as well as a chair when in extended position.
While I have illustrated the preferred form of construction it is apparent that slight changes and alterations may be made during manufacture without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the appended claim.
Having described my invention what I claim as new and useful is:
An article of the class described including a supporting member. seat members. means pivotally connecting the seat members to the supporting member at one end thereof, supporting legs. means hingedly connecting the supporting legs to the supporting member at the other end thereof, link members. means connecting the corresponding end portions of the link members to the legs together. means pivotally connecting the opposite corresponding end portions of the link members together, other link members, means pivotally connecting corresponding end portions of the last mentioned link members to the seat members, acollar providing a sliding connection between the opposite end portions of the last mentioned link members and the supporting member, and an operative connection between the collar and the means connecting the said opposite corresponding end portions of the first mentioned link members together.
In witness whereof, I have hereunto subscribed my name this 30th day of January A. D., 1926.
GEORGE FRANZ.
