PORTABLE FILE.
Application led November li/y invention relates to portable file outjrits particularly to an outfit in which is ,d the tiling device of my vPatent NO. 81,937, dated June 21, 1921. The filing vice of the patentreferred to comprises a bottom cover member and a top cover member, said members being hinged at their rear edges to a non-toldable back part to wl'ii'ch leaves are hinged at' spaced intervals to leave spaces for the storage of papers or other material, such' back part being'free to assume various anglesl of inclination relative to the cover members depending upon the amount of material inserted between the .vso that the leaves may at all times remain horizontal when the device is laid flat on a support, the leaves'being all of the same length so that when the back part is at anangle with the cover members, index tabs secured along the outer edges of the leaves will become Visible for reference.
The important object of my invention is to incorporate the tiling device of the patent referred to in vertical position in a container such as a portfolio or salesinans reference ease. lin this use ofthe tiling device itpreferably normally rests on its back part with the cover members and partition leaves extending vertically, and in accordance with myV invention I so construct the container that the filing device can be readily shifted erein and supported in position with its back or bottom part at an angle to cause overlapping of the upper ends of the lea-ves and exposure of the index tabs so that the contents of vthe filing device can be readily located and referred to.
rThe invention is clearly illustrated on the accompanying drawing in which,
lignre 1 is a vertical transverse sectional view oi" a containing case and the index device therein;
Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the conner opened and the'i'iling device raised it.- o tab exposing position;
g. 3 is a perspective view or" the lower ion of the container case showing the ingement Jor supporting the iiling dein normal or exposed position, and
l shows a modiiied arrangement. ne ling device shown comprises the cove-r members 10 and 11, the bottom wall 12 to which the cover members are hinged, and the leaves or partition walls 13 se-I 9, 1925- Seral No. 67,710.
cured to the bottom wall 12 at spaced iutervals to form compartments for materials to be iiled.
The container case showninay be con# structed of leather or other suitable material and is of rectangular cross section, being provided at its top with the closure `trame* 14 and with handles 15. Theiiling device may take up the entire case or occupy only' section thereof. Then occupying the whole case, the bottom wall 12 oit' the filing device will be of the samewidth as the bottom ot the case, on which bottom the wall 12 normally rests as shown in Figure 1, and in which position the cover members 10 and 11 and the partition walls will terminate below the closure frame 14 so that this trame can be closed. lWhen it is desired to use the iiling device, the case is opened and the cover members 11 of the device is raised along the adjacent wall 16 of the case. Such raising of the member 11 will raise the bottom wall 12 to inclined position and will bring the upright walls of the device in overlapping positions at the top ot the case so that the index tabs 17 will be exposed. Such positioning oit the filing device will decrease its thicl ness,rand in order to hold the device in its exposing position, an abutment 18 is provided at the bottom of the case against which the joint between the cover member 10 and the bottom wall 12 may abut and restin order to hold the filing device in its upper and exposing position. The abutment could be one side of a groove 19 extending longitudinally in the bottom of the case and such grove could convenient-Y ly be provided by leather strips 20 and 21 secured against the bottom of the case and spaced at their inner edges to leave the groove 1f). These strips 2O and 21 will then form a horizontal seat for the wall 12 of the filing device when the case is to be closel, and when the case is openedv and the cover n mber 11 or the device is raised, the joint between the cover member 10 and the bottom wall 12 will readily slideV into the groove 19 and against the abutment 18 to loc-lr the device in its service position. l'lilhen it is desired to restore the device to a normal position the member 10 thereof is lifted sutiiciently to withdraw its lower edge from the groove 19 and then the weight or the materials in the device will canse it assume its normal position with its Wall seating against the Case bottom.
AS shown in Fig. fl.- a number of grooves mayv be provided by strips 23 for holding.- the bottom wall 12 in various angular positions depending upon the amount of material held in the tile.
M v improved structure and combination provides a ver7 desirable and convenient outiit which can be eitieiently used by salesmen. contraetors, business men, and for general purposes.
l do not desire to be limited to the precise construction and arrangement shown and dezn'ibed as moditieations can be made which would still be included in the invention which l claim as followsl. ln combination, a tiling device comprisin` cover members. a bottom ivall hinged to the lower edges ot said cover members. and leaves hinged to said bottom wall spaced intervals to 'torni tilingcompartments, a case in which said tiling device normallyv rests with its bottom Wall flat against the case bottom, and an abutment on the bottom ot' the said case t'or receiving' one edge ot said bottom ivall and for holding said bottom wall in an inclined position with its other edge against the rear Wall ol said case.
In combination, a tiling device comprising cover members, a bottom Wall hinged to the loiver edges or said eover members,
leaves hinged to said bottom wall at spaced against one side ot' said ease .vith said leaves overlappinglj7 extended at their upper ends. rpu'ard pull of the opposite cover member ol said tiling device causing' said bottom ivall and irst mentioned cover member to assume their normal positions.
.ln Witness whereof, I hereunto subscribe n v name this 5th day of November, 1925.
