fApplie'atidn mea May is,
This invention relatesto those hat boxesy having the form of drums anddesigned to be carriedv in ythe hand. `Hat` boxes otthis characterheretofore have been made of af body portionandalid, the lid being hinged to the body adjacentlthe flat side .ofthe hat box. n Asa consequence it is ditHcult to open the lid whenthe hat box is set'do'wn .-on
its flat side as the weight `of thematerial.
packed within the hat box tends to vprevent;
the openingotfth'e lid andthe act ot open ing the lid causes the hat box tobe raised. Y The vgeneralobject of the present invenwith a lid which is hinged to the body of the hat box a distance above its flat lower face so that the lid may be opened without .trouble and thus access may be had to the hat box without any particular effort and without tending to'cause the disarrangement of the material within the hat box.
A further object is to provide means on the body of the hat box engaging the lid when it is closed and acting to prevent any lateral movement of the lid and thus take olii any strain from the flexible hinge by which the lid is'connec'ted to the'body ofthe My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings wherein v igure 1 is a side elevation of a hat box constructed in Vaccordance. with my invention- Fig. 2 is a fragmentary side.` elevation showing the lid ofthe hat box open;
Vimitation leather and at a point opposite the side 11 is provided with a handle 12.V The Wall of the body 10 is also provided with the usual latches 13 whereby the lid is held closed. Y
In the ordinary hat box the peripheral wall of the drum has its edge disposed-enyieee. .,senal-lio.'109,909.41` I i i tirely in one` plane but improved box the lower Assienon ro sEWARD TRNKQAND A CORPORATION oFfvIRGINIAE Y portion of the body-10islat:

hinged by Ia flexible This lateral extension inclined as at land hinge 17 to the wall 15 is the lid18 which 1s approximately; semijcircular in form and has a` rim"orange y19,v thegends of-which are cut often an incline jasfat 20, soY asto abut againstthe inclined edges 16 tension 14 when .theflidisclosed.V
In order 'to brace" thi'sf ,lidfa'gainst lateral covering of the "body 10 terminates short of -Inovem'ent when the lid is closedt -he outside,
the edge 21 as at 22, and at the ends of the ,y
extension 14 this outside covering also terinmates short ofthe inside lining as at 23, and thus, when the lid is closed,rthe rim 19 fits down over these portions 2l and 23 and the lid is held against lateral movement.
In order to simulate the construction of the ordinary hat box, the outer covering of the body 10 and the extension 14 ismade in two pieces so that there is an apparent joint 24 extending around the -lower portion of the hat box in line with the edge 22 and the cov` eringv of the extension 14 -is stitched at y25 so that when th-e lid is closed except for the inclined joint or line of separation .at 20, the
lid is apparently'hinged to the low-er'end of the body 10 in the usual manner. The lower or l'lat end of the body 10 is provided with v the knobs 26 in the usual mannerand the lid` is, of course, provided with keepers with which thelatches 13 are adapted to engage.
The lid is also provided with a hasp 27 engaging with a lock 28 mounted upon the body. Of course, the interior of the body of the hat box and the lid are suitably lined esV and provided with the usual pockets and hat f holders. A l
I do not wish to be limited to the details of construction as theseY might be varied in many ways but it will be seen that by pro-A viding a lid which-is not hinged to the lower 'end of the hat box that thisA lid may be readily opened withoutany tendency to lift the hat box itself and that the lidmay be opened either slightly or all the Way down and yet the articles packed vwithin the hat box will be held in place by reason of the wall 17. Thus, articles may betaken out of V Aextension i. l' this hat box or insertedv Within it With inuoh less i tenvlemy.to?disarringe'y :the '.ontents then is ordinarily the ease;
