Description
H. BEbKER.
Chimney-Top. No.160,074. PatentedFeb.23,18 75 W x i THE GRAPHIC CDJHOTOLITNJQEH PARK PLACE, N.Y.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY BECKER, OF BLAUVELTVILLE, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN CHIMNEY-TOPS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 160,074, dated February 23, 1875 application filed January 18, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY BECKER, of Blauveltville, Rockland county, New York, have invented a new and Improved Ohimney- Top, of which the following is a specification:
Figure 1 represents a vertical central section of my improved chimney-top, and Fig. 2 a side view of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
My invention relates to an improved chimney-top that may be readily applied to and detached from the chimney-coping, being rigidly seated thereon when in position, and preventing rain or moisture from entering, and facilitating the cleaning of the fines.
The invention consists of a conical chimneytop, whose base-plate is provided with two or more outwardly-curved lugs, that bind after passing through the corners of the flue-opening on the sides of the chimney-coping.
A represents a chimney-top, which is made, preferably, of conical-shape, and of cast-iron or other suitable material. The base part B of the chimney-top is of larger size than the square flue-opening in the chimney-coping A, and is fitted thereon in such a manner that the opening is closed, and the entrance of rain or moisture to the flue prevented. Any number of chimney-tops may be arranged in one or two rows on the coping or top plate A, according to the number of flues in the chimney. The coping is secured, by a chimney-binding bottom flange, to the top part of the chimney. The under side of the base part B is cast or otherwise provided with two or more-by preference f0ureXtension-lugs, O, which are placed midway between the sides of the base, and project toward the outside, having re cesses corresponding to the thickness of the chimney-coping. The outer ends of the lugs 0 form a square equal to the size of the flueopenings, so that the lugs are readily passed through the flue-opening by being placed in the corners of the same, binding, on being turned, firmly to the under side of the coping. The chimney-top is thereby securely supported on the coping, while allowing, also, its ready removal whenever it is necessary to clean the flues from soot, &c., or for repairs.
The conical top A increases the draft, as the wind is prevented from entering directly into the tines, so as to force the smoke back.
The whole forms a neat, cheap, and protective coping and smoke-conveying attachment to a chimney-top, which, by its durability and usefulness, furnishes a valuable top-covering for chimneys.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent The chimney-top A, having base B and subjacent lugs O, constructed and arranged substantially as shown and described, to enable it to be attached to coping-plate A, in the manner set forth.
HENRY BECKER.
