Description

21 19 Sept. 26 1'. A. MEEHAN DISPLAY DEVICE- Filed April 22, 1926 Patented Sept. 21, 1926.
. UNITEDTSTATE'S P'ATiEiN-ITI O THOMAS A. MEEHAN, OF ASTORIA, NEW'YORK, ASSIGNOR'TO OLD MASTERS" CORPORATION, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., A CORPORATION OF YORK. I
DISPLAY DEVICE.
Application filed Aprilv 22, 1926. Serial 1%. 108,807
This invention relates to display devices, and has particularre'ference to those which are formed as a self supporting unitary structure. y 1
Among the objects of this invention is to provide a display device which can be made of a pieceofsheet material such as paperand provide a main or central picture or panel, and supporting means for the panel which are adapted likewise forpurposes of display or advertising. t
Another object of this invention is to provide a display device which is formed with a minimum waste of material and prefer-' ably as a stamping or the like, the structurebeing of maximum simplicity, and being set up with the greatest ease.
. WVith the foregoing and other objects in view the invention consists in the arrangement and'combination of parts hereinafter described and claimed, and while the invention is not restricted to the exact details of construction disclosed or suggested herein, still for the purpose of illustrating a practical embodiment thereof reference is had to the accompanyingdrawin'gs in which like reference characters designate the same parts in the several views, and in which 7 Figure 1 is a view of a blank. Fig. 2 is a front view of the finished display device.
Fig. 3 is a sectional view on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2. v
Referring now more specifically to the drawings, I show my invention as being formed of a single piece of cardboard or the like and assuming generally the form of a blank 10, which is substantially rectangular. A pair of score lines 11 and 12 which are substantially parallel to each other extend transversely from certain points spaced from the top of the blank down to the bottom of the blank. extend from the upper ends of the score lines to the top of the blank. A pair of score lines 15 and 16 extend inward from the junctions of the slits 13, 14 with the score lines 11, 12. The score lines 15 and 16 constitute hinge lines and are therefore in alinement with each other, their inner ends being spaced apart to provide an unbroken central panel P therebetween. Preferably a pair of slits or cuts 17 and 18 extend downward from the inner ends of the hinge lines in spaced relation to the vertical score lines Slits or cuts 13 and 14' 11, 12 and positionedinward thereof. Thus it'will be. seen'that the blank is divided ;up so asto provide acentral panel, and a' pair; of wing members to support the panel positioned at the sides thereof, said wing members beingof angular construction in that they consist each of themain ,or outer panels 19 and 20 and of the auxiliary braces orflanges 21 and22. 'The'central panel P is somewhat longer thanthe wing members,
its upper edge 23 projecting above the wing members in the blank, while its lower edge 24 projects below said members. When the device'is set up for display, howeverfthe height of the various partswill appear to be substantially the same, since the central panel P will assumearearwardly' inclined position by tilting about the hinge lines 15, 16 due to itsprojecting lower portion. The wings are adjusted'forwardly about the score lines 11, 12 thus'rendering the device self supporting in an efficient manner.
The panel P. is intended to contain the main picture or story intended to be conveyed to the public, all parts thereof being utilized. The panels 19 and 20 of the wing members are likewise intended to contain display or advertising matter. As thus set up, the display device assumes a particularly attractive and neat appearance.
The specific arrangement of cuts and score lines in t e blank can be readily varied to suit different conditionsv or advertisements. Thus the-form of the slits 17, 18 is preferably such as to follow the outline of the picture on the panel P where such picture is disposed adjacent to said slits. Toward the bottom of the device, the slits 17 18 may assume an ornamental form'as shown at 17 a 18. Slits .13, lljmay likewise be varied to enhance the attractiveness of the. device, as by having the central panel cut inwardly at 25. Generally, however, the various cuts and score lines are so arranged as to provide approximately horizontal score or hinge lines in alinement with each other extending from the central panel to the wing members, a plurality of cuts being formed at each of the hinge lines one of which extends upward and the other downward from its respective hinge line to separate the central panel from the wing members, and permit said panel to be inclined with the vertical about the hinge lines as an axis. This invention wherein a pair of horizontal hinge portions, the central portion being slitted adjacent to said-score lines and scored by alined lines extending from the ends of said slits approximately at right angles "to the acljacenitfirst mentionedscore lines't'hjus pro-- viding a'central panel in said central portion of the device which is adapted to be positioned at an incline with the vertical.
21A display device comprising a body having t-W'O score lines extending lHSLll7- stan-tia'lly parallel relation from points in spaced relation to the top of the device ap proximately to the bottom thereof, the .device being cut from the upper ends of said score lines approximately tothe top of the device, substantially horizontal score lines being provided extending in alinement from the points aforesaid inward and with their inner ends in spaced'relation'to each other, and cuts being provided extending from said inner ends downward so as to permit the panel formed between the last men tioned cuts to be inclined about the horizontal score lines as a hinge.
3. A display device having a central panel, Wing members to support the panel at the sides thereof, and hinge means between the central panel and the Wing members formed by approximately horizontal score lines in alinement With each other extending from the central panel to thewing members, and a: plurality of cuts at each score line one of which extends upward and; the other downward to separate the panel from the-Wing members and permit the same to be inclined with the vertical about the horizontal score lines as the hinge axis.
4. A display device having a central panel, and Wing members at the sides of the panel-to support the same,- said Wing members being of angular cross section,
said panel being hingedly conneetedqto'said Wing members along a horizontal line the sides of the panel whereby the panel can beinclined'at, an angle/Withthe-vertical,'
While being supported.
In testimony whereof I alfix -m-y signa ture.
