Description

Sept. 2l 1926.
w. JOHNSON ARTIcLE AND PRocEss FOR PRODUGING ILLUSTRATIONS Filed May 9 the photographic zinc etching process and printed tor advertising` purposes or the lile,
In the first stated method ot producing the stock design, wherein it is printed in ordinariY light blue ink, the third step ot the operation is ot course omitted and all parts ot the design which it is desired to show in the completed illustration must be traced bv hand in blacl; ink. Those lett in tl e original blue color will not photograph, thus the sam-e result is obtained, but the method is slower and requires a more eX- pert artist toithe additional worl: upon the stoel; design.
In stock designs otl a certain class., that is` in which veryv little ot the stock des n is intended to be covered by the su efpient sketch, I have found it advantageous to print the whole design in inpathetic inl: et a color or line that will photoxgfgapli` depending upon the reagent onl'v to, photoeraphicallv speaking'l` obliterate bv chaneing`r the portion covered b v the sketch or not desired to reproduce. thus revers i; the operation described in the third step.
Mv method oit producing illustr practicable, usine' as the stocl de cuts, line cuts with Ben Dav effects, tones. or an)7 ot the ordinary method-al o reprodrction in use. It is thus evident that :m3v desired medium or technique ma;7 be used in thD drawing', from which the stoel: cut is made.` and likewise in the subsequent drawing made upon the print ot the stock cut.
Visible to the cemera is used to indicate color or tone which will be visible by contrast when photographed.
Invisible to the camera is used to indicate color or tone which will not show by cont-rast when photographed.
li'lhat l claim, is: A
l. An 'article ot manufacture for use in link;
d gn in a medium visible to the effe but invisible to the camera, elaboratinfr upon said design by drawingthereupon in a niedium -ble to both eve and can'iera. and causing' selected portions ot said stoel: desie'n to become visible to the camera tor paotoe'raphing.
#1. The proc-ess ot producin; Y commercial ornamentation consisting' oit printingl a dein a sympathetic inl;I` elaboratig' on n, and then so treatingl said rst design to chance its actinic quality.
A. step in the process ot makingT illustrations troni a skeleton base common to :i plrralit)v ot' illustrations.` conf' inn' oil.3 the actinic quality ot a portion ti. in article ot manufacture vtor use in the production ot connnercial illustrations, con'iprisingr a stock picture adapted tor elaboration bj: drawing); thereon. said picture ieine; printed in an ink ot one actinic value and capable of havingl the actinic value of certain portions theerot cl'ianfged b v suitable treatment.
ln testimony whereof7 I atlix my signinture.
VYNNE JOHNSON.
