Application filed Nvember 12,' 1925;rv
rIhis invention relates to internal combustion engines ofthe double acting type although the principleinvolved may be also employed in Connection with other types of internal combustion engines. 1
An object of the invention resides inthe provision of separate compression cylinders whichy may be positioned laterally Vwith `respect to the explosion cylinders, and in which the cylinder charges are compressed and then directed to the explosion chamber.
'Another object of the invention consists in so-arranging both the 'explosion cylinder and the compression cylinder that thererspe'ctive pistons thereof may both be `attached to the same piston pin'which in'zturn has two connections with the main lcrank shaft.
A further object ofy l in a construction in which a much lighter flywheel may be employed and in which the flywheel may be positioned midway o the length ofthe crank shaft ratherthan at an extreme end thereof. i
Another object of the invention is to `so construct and combine the parts that the engine is one of extreme simplicity compris ing few parts and susceptible'of `production `at a. relatively low cost. i
'Other' obj ects and advantages of theinvention will be apparent from the following description when taken in connection'with the accompanying drawings in which l Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal section through one embodiment ofthe invention employing twoy explosion cylinders.
Figure 2 isv arear elevational view of the engine shown in Figure 1. v
Figure 3 is an end elevational ing the carburetor and connections in view showfull , lines.
Figure 4 is a fragmentary sectional view of one end of one of the compression cylinders.
Figure 5 is an elevational view taken at the side opposite to that shown in Figure 2.
Figure 6 is a vertical sectional view taken on the line 6-6 of Figure 5, and
Figure 7 is al fragmentary horizontal section through the upper portion of the casino'.
z'eferring to the drawings more in detail the numeral 1 designates generally the crank case in which is mounted the crank shaft 2 provided with the number of crank'arms 3 desired, and while four such arms are shown the invention resides f -13 withthe inlets lends of the cylinders the inner limit of the.
serial No. esiste.-y
in the ypresent embodiment ofthe inventionv itwill be apparent that thisnumber may be i increased or decreased depending upon the v number of lexplosion cylinders required.
Mounted above the crank `case are two double' acting explosion cylinders 4 each provided withi the' usual' water jackets y 5. rFliese cylinders 4 are plosion chamberl 6 aty eachv end thereof provided with-a sparking device`7 (Figp):
`Flach. Vcylinder 4*isalso Aprovided with a' `doublepiston 8 which is closed at Vits :outer ends'fand with ycharge receiving inlets 9 to be laterdescribed. 1'- 'i Positioned adjacent each explosion cylinder 4 but spaced therefrom is a compression cylinder .10 vin which is mounted a double piston 11 having its .outer ends open as shown in Figures 1 and 4. .The Vextreme ends of the-cylinders 10 are providedwith outlets 12fwhich l v9 of thel explosion chambers, and itshould here be vnoted that these inlets are located at ypoints remote from the 4; i. e., at substantially stroke of the piston 8. y On rtheside of each compression cylinder 10 opposite to the outlet 12 is anintake valve 14 positioned in the intake manifold 15 to which may be attached'l any type' `of carburetor 16.`
I will now describe the structure by which the pistons 8 and 11 are operated. 1
A ypiston pin 17. extends through the pis- 10 and has connected` thereto aconnecting formed with an ex.
are connected by conduits' rod V18V as clearly` depicted `on 'Figure 1.
Thiszconnecting rod yis located between the two cylinders and has its lopposite end attached to the crank arm 3. Piston pin 17 is also provided with an extension 19 to which is attafbwl a connecting/rod 20 having its opposed nw-1! associated with a crank arm 3.k Obviously a clearance must be provided forv the reciprocation i and for this purpose are provided with slots 21 and 22 respectively, these slots being closed by the side walls of the elongated pistons 8 and 11.
Exhaust ports the walls of the cylinders 4` at points `opposite the intake ports `9, and these ports communicate with exhaust pipes 24 leading to the atmosphere. y Circulation of a cooling the cylinders 4 and 10 the vertically extending 23 (Fig. 2) are formed ,inl
100. i' of the piston vpin 17 'l Cil the pipes 25 Whichqcommunicate With the Water jacket 5, and which may be connected to the radiator by the usual hose couplings (not shown).
In the preferred form of the invention the flywheel 26 is mounted intermediate the ends ot' the crank shaft 2 and is geared to the light dynamo 27 (Fig. 3)A and the starting motor v28. 'Ivhe entire engine if pre'- ferrred may be enclosed Within a casing E29.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings it -will be apparent that I have devised a simple and novel construction by which the charges for internal combustion engines of any type may be compressed independently of' the explosion cylinders, 'that the engine will generate considerable pov/ver even at low speeds, and will be almost vibrationless in operation;
In accordance with the patent statutes I have described what I now believe tokbe the best embodiment of the invention, but I do `not Wish to be understood thereby as limiting myself or the scope of the invention, as many changes and modilications may be made Without departing from the spirit of the invention; all such I. aim to include in the scope et the appended claims.
TW hat I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: i
l. In combination an explosion cylinder and a compression cylinder arranged adjacentvthereto and parallel therewith, pistons arranged in each of said cylinders, a crank shat't, connecting rods betiven said crank shaft and pistons, and conduits leading from the extreme ends of the compression cylinder to the opposed ends of the eX'- plosion cylinder.
2. In combination an explosion cylinder and a compression cylinder adjacent thereto and parallel therewith, pistons arranged in each of said cylinders, means ,for operating said pistons in unison, conduits leading from the extreme ends of the compression cylinder to the opposed ends ot the explosion cylinder, and an intake valve for each end ofthe compression cylinder.
3. In a double acting explosive engine a cylinder having an explosion chamber at each end thereof, a double piston in. said cylinder, a compression cylinder adjacent said first-named cylinder, a double piston in said compression cylinder,v` means for operating said pistons in unison, and conduits leading from the outer 'extreme ends ot' the compression cylinder to the inner ends of the explosion chambers.
4. In a rdouble'acting explosive engine a cylinder having an explosion chamber at each end thereof, a double piston in vsaid cylinder having its outer ends closed, ay cylinder adjacent said first` compression named cylinder, a-double piston in said cornpression cylinder having` its outer ends open, means for operating said pist-ons in unison, and conduits leading from the outer eXtreme ends ot the compression cylinder to the inner ends of the explosion chambers.
`5. In a double acting explosive engine a cylinder having an explosive chamber at each end thereof, a compression cylinder spaced slightly from said first-named cylind-er, doublev pistons in each of said cylinders, a piston pin extending through both cf said double pistons, a crank" shaft, anda connecting rod positioned between said cylinders and connected to said piston pin and crank shaft,
G. In combination an explosion cylinder and a compression cylinder spaced apart, a piston in each of said cylinders, a piston pin extending through both of said pistons and provided With an extension, a crank shaft, connecting rods attached to said crank shaft, one of said connecting rods being positioned between said cylinders and connected to an intermediate portion ot said piston pin, the other connecting rod being connected to the extension of said piston pin.
